have condensation which leaves black goo on the walls which i wash off, but i read that you can use a paint. how does that work, does the black wash off or just not attract the mould?

the best treatment for mould is to reduce the excess humidity which causes condensation and damp.

The two main cures are increased ventilation, and not draping wet washing around your home.

I don't know the answer but watching with interest, we have an old stone cottage in a exposed location in an area of the country known for dampness. Everywhere needs regular mould removal in the winter, would love to know if there's a paint that would help.

i know all that piglet (no offence) but want a paint that i can use that will either stop the blackness or make it easier to clean. I have googled and there is alot just wanted one that works!

Watching as well - my bathroom has a patch over the shower, which despite leaving the window open to air hasn't kept the mould at bay.

Going to attempt hg mould solution and then paint over with proper bathroom paint - not sure if that will be enough ....

has anyone used \link{http://www.gowallpaper.co.uk/zinsser-perma-white-interior-eggshell.html\this one?}

Would love to know too. I want my porch, stairwell and landing painted - at the moment I'm cleaning off the mould every few weeks and the existing wallpaper is black in places and peeling off.

I heat and ventilate as much as possible, use fans, don't hang washing in the house etc, etc. I can't hang pictures or have furniture on or near outside walls as mould will grow on it Sad

Weeditandreap · 17/11/2013 21:25

That paint looks very promising Sea. I know my decorator treated one of my living room walls with something before wallpapering and although the wall doesn't seem to be affected, I've had to clean mould off the back of the sofa which is next to it.

anti-condensation paint usually has ground cork or insulating beads in it. It makes a tiny difference, but when you consider that an insulated wall might have 70mm of insulation in it, and an insulated ceiling might have 250mm, you can see that 2mm of thick paint will not do much good. They are usually quite rough, not glossy, so I think would be difficult to clean.

You can also get fungicidal coatings that poison the mould.

Wow that paint sounds the biz, OP. Thanks.
I have just the same problem in my bathroom ( v small, north facing, external wall on two sides, old Pennine cottage). I'll give that paint a go.

PrimalLass · 18/11/2013 13:56

Definitely Zinsser. I use this one a lot:

Selks · 18/11/2013 16:23

Is that stain block better than other makes, PrimalLass? I have a troublesome patch in my porch that got stained when the roof leaked - I painted it with stain block (can't remember which brand but it wasn't Zinsser) and the stain seems to be emerging again (no damp coming through, just the stain).

PrimalLass · 18/11/2013 16:26

I think so. I used it mainly as a primer for painting furniture, but it has a good reputation. I need to paint over a stain on the living room ceiling at some point.

anchovies · 18/11/2013 16:29

I painted my bathroom ceiling with ronseal anti mould paint about a year ago and have literally not had a single black spot since, would highly recommend it. The downside is I think it is only available in white...

Have also used a paint additive supposedly based on nasa technology which was useless. Dds room went ronseal white in the end too!

I've recently used zinnzer 123 on some delightful varnished wood paneling in the hall. it's covered everything and can't imagine anything coming through. I know others have used it for nicotine stains and did a great job.
