striped stair carpet hall AND feature walls?

Heeeeeelp! Our hall desperately needs a new carpet, the existing one looks like it has been there since the 70's...At the moment I am loving striped carpeted stairs but with plain carpet at the top and bottom. I am also heavily tempted to do a feature wall at the bottom and a bit at the top but have the main walls including those by the stairs in v neutral off white grey or browny.

The stripes would be neutral, either in tones of brown, or silver and reasonably thick as this is our preference. Looking at this range. www.carpetright.co.uk/range-boston-carpets.html.

Also looking at the feature wall being prob v neutral and metallic to match in to the feature carpet. Liking Osborne and little salome above..

but also liking Osborne and little grove garden www.osborneandlittle.com/products-and-collections/wallcoverings/spring-2011/wallpaper-album-5/grove-garden

Impossioble to choose! Am wondering if should just paint the damn walls all neutral and use art etc to be the feature bc the striped stairs will be so prominent. Do I even need a feature wall?!! And can I bring in colour to the feature wall or will that look too busy on the eye what with the stripes. Hallway's not that big thought bigger than average.

Can anyone advise pliz! :)
Thanks

I don't like feature walls but that is just me! I've been on here asking advice about lighting...thank goodness for mumsnet! I think neutral walls and a striped stair carpet could look really nice! Would you ever have a stripy runner? I guess it would get dusty either side though...

thanks minimalist! I love feature walls and struggle with only painting but think it wouldprob look better without wallpaper.

Now to choose the stripes...

May look too busy with stripes and then patterned paper. I've got a stripped sisal runner then the wall running up the stairs has a dado rail (original to the Edwardian house) so I've painted the top half white and the bottom half a charcoal colour. The wall colour is very striking but picks out one of the colours in the runner and so really blends. It gets lots of compliments when anybody visits.

what colours are in ur runner? would prefer carpet tbh and we are in a 70s semi so dado rail wouldn't work.
.but it sounds really striking from what u describe.

We have browns/black and a golden yellow - sounds vile but picks up the colours in the Minton tiles and looks great, Imo if you go for stripes then I would do the walls neutral so the stripes really stand out. .crucial-trading.com Crucial Trading do nice wool stripped carpets Smile

Try again crucial trading

ok I'm going to relent and go with stripes and neutral walls and NO metallic wallpaper....for now Grin !

The sisal is good but blooming pricey! $25 p sq m ...also thinking thin or medium stripes with more colours eg olive slate dark red but it is subtle. Thoughts? x

Our stair carpet is striped in multi browns/beiges and continues onto the landing. Walls are neutral, but it is an enclosed stairway and needs to be light. I love the stripes. Feature walls don't do it for me, but lots of art does.

shouty what do u reckon, thin or wider stripes, which are yours? Again I'm coming round to a non wallpaper way of life (slowly)..

Must. get. life! (I'm pregnant so a bit mad nesty indecisive atm..) apologiesGrin

Our stripes are various widths, max 1cm, with colours I'd describe as chocolate, coffee, biscuit, rust, beige, straw and sand. It's been down 4/5 years and still looks great. Should I have said the stripes go up and down rather than across, or is that a given? I'm crap at describing any kind of style stuff.
