Only one radiator working - help!

moved in to a new house about a month ago.

i know they were all working earlier in the week, but now only the one in the bathroom is on?

Pilot light is on on the boiler, and thermostat set to max.

Any ideas as i am freezing, but cant afford a plumber, especially at weekend rates!

it sounds like you might have air in the radiators - are they hot at the bottom? you can let the air out of the radiator by turning the little grommit thing at the top of the rads - you will need a radiator key but i daresay you can pick one up in a DIY store. If you have a combi system you will then need to refil the boiler until the pressure guage is within the optimum range. When you turn the grommit just turn it slightly until it starts to bubble, then switch off.

they are cold the whole way up, as are the pipes going in/out Confused

DP says are you sure they are on? although you would expect the pipes to be warm - just turn them off and on again? A freind of our s actually had DP out for rads that weren't working and they had been switched off.

I'm glad you put this thread up as I'm hoping someone will end the age old argument in our house - do you drain the rads with the heating on or off ! I say off and Hubby say on !!! Would love to know who's right !!!!

LEMisafucker · 16/11/2013 10:56

depends if you want to have hot or cold water sprayed over you if you don't quite switch it off on time!

OnePlanOnHouzz · 16/11/2013 11:03

I always thought it needed to be off so that air isn't sucked in to equalise the balance or something technical like that ?!? I always have a wadge of kitchen roll at the ready when I drain them !

www.uswitch.com/energy-saving/guides/how-to-bleed-a-radiator/
according to this it's bled with the heating off !!!

what do the radiator valves look like? have they got numbers on?

how old is the heating system?

it is very unlikely to be air in the radiators if they have all stopped working. What is the timer/programmer set to?

has anyone recently taken a radiator off for redecorating or something?

is there a pressure guage on your boiler?

have you got a hot-water cylinder?

PigletJohn · 16/11/2013 12:50

when you say thermostat, you do mean the wall thermostat, not the boiler thermostat?

CrochetKate · 16/11/2013 12:58

Thanks for all your replies. Left it on all night to see what happened. All got hot except lounge and dining room.

The pipes leading to them are hot, but not the rads. The valves there don't twist, thought perhaps they might with pliers?
