removing carpet from stairs: what next?

We have about 5 steps leading from our hall into the kitchen. They are currently covered in very manky carpet. It's a grubby, high traffic area, and I think carpet is a crap idea. I was planning to take up the carpet and.... well and what? I thought sand and polish what is underneath, assuming it's serviceable. We are about to have other carpet replaced, so I'll get them to remove this at the same time. Is it easy to sand and polish a few steps? My dad has an electric sander if that helps.

Snap ! 3.4 & 12 months here.
How wide are the stairs ? You could always fit a small plastic slide for the kids Grin
these might be worth a look but there are no reviews and no mention of non slip as a feature though I can't imagine that they won't be.

Small plastic slide! Or give them a tray. Me and my friends used to go down their stairs on a dinner tray. Big floor to ceiling window at the bottom with a drop into the garden below. God knows how we survived!

Those might be a goer if I paint or varnish. Stairs are "normal" width for a house of this age. Maybe 75cm.
