Please teach me how to do Scandi dining room. I'm clueless

Love Scandinavian style. Stuff like this.

We're decorating a very VERY dark dining room. Floor is mid-toned real wood so that won't change. Dining table is oak and staying.

Scandi seems to be white walls, with blues/greys and pops of colour. But how to do this in a room with limited soft furnishings?

And it really is a dark room that light just can't seem to reach. So would pale grey be too grim? Is pure brilliant white going to cope with the lack of light?

There's only two tiny windows, shaped like the thin ones in castles for firing arrows through! (We don't live in a castle mind)

There's french door things but they open into the conservatory so no light gets in.

So, I need:

Wall lights
Ceiling light
Floor standing light(s)
Possibly wallpaper, depending on the state of the walls when the current wallpaper comes off.
Floor length curtains for french doors.

Please help me shop for this!

I have similar, and am looking to do similar!
I'm going to paint all white initially, then see how liveable it is.

I have very pale blue curtains that I will hang at the patio doors (Parma grey F&B is closest shade). I would like grey walls, but the colour of the light that enters the room is wrong. I painted my bedroom pale grey, and it looks awful really- light is too yellow, and grey os wrong type Sad

Have you looked on pinterest for inspiration? There are a lot of good pictures on there for this style.

Thanks bsc. I tend to agree re the white/grey. I'd planned to do the same - paint it white and see how it looks.

Have you got lighting?

An yes, I've pinterested to death Grin It's finding the actual items to buy now!

For lighting, I would go for this:

John Lewis

or

John Lewis 2

I would also paint the wood floor white or very pale grey and lime the oak table too easily done, happy to give tips!

It's a really restful look and so easy to live with. Especially gorgeous at Christmas all twinkly and white.

My whole house is pure brilliant white and it seems to work in all rooms whichever side of the house?

LowLevelWhinging · 04/11/2013 09:58

i blummin LOVE those lights! The designer Danish ones as seen in Borgen are ££££

I'm struggling to find appropriate wall lights. Any thoughts?

Have you any room for a tall floor lamp? It can add a nice glow to the room and there are some lovely Scandi designs out there

I think bright chairs could lift it too.

You should be able to achieve a scandi look in a dark room. Good lighting, mirrors and uncluttered lines will make all the difference. Those JL lights suggested by Surrey would look great (I have the second one in my dining room and love it!). You could consider mid century furniture like this which IMO has quite a Scandinavian feel.

LowLevelWhinging · 04/11/2013 17:24

I think we'll go for 2 floor lamps as well as the wall lights (that are already there but need replacing).

Anyone seen any good fabrics, or brands to look at for curtains? I love Marimekko but none of the prints are quite right.

Sounds like our dining rooms are similar! I have strong white on the walls, cornforth white on the woodwork and a dulux brilliant white ceiling and coving. It looks light and warm and I love it! Floorboards sound like yours. It is a brilliant backdrop for introducing pretty much any other colour you like!

Ps still looking for curtains or a blind so will watch this thread with interest ...

OnePlanOnHouzz · 05/11/2013 09:46

Add daylight bulbs to any wall lights or an overhead light ie the ones that are on during the daytime - then have soft white bulbs in the lamps you want to use at night - ie a lamps on a sidetable for a more relaxed feel ! Will make a big difference ! Enough to let you go for a greige or grey wall paint !

LowLevelWhinging · 05/11/2013 14:14

OnePlan, that's a good tip thank you!

Window, what good taste you have! What kind of fabric are you thinking - bold or toning in?

I love bright pops of primary or bright colours - hate browns, sludgey greens and oranges. I have a theory that my colour taste is due to what colours I suit wearing, so subconsciously I want my decor to make me look good! Grin

My pinterest board is here if anyone's interested in helping me find stuff.
