Expedit unit to contain hall clutter/chaos?

Pannacotta · 03/11/2013 11:13

I really need to sort out my hall which resembles our local Primark!
It's hats/gloves/book bags/PE kit/post/spare bags which I need to store -there is no porch/hall cupboard/utility room.

I need a cheap solution which will help contain the above but will look ok - the hall is quite large and formal with dado rail, wooden floor and panelled ceiling etc.

Colours will be cream above dado and dark grey under the dado once it is painted.

Would an Expedit unit (plus baskets inside each cube) work here or would it just look messy and modern?

The other option is to get a chest of drawers and bung it all in there but am not sure my DSs would ever bother to put anything away (am trying to house train them but its a slow process)!

Any thoughts/other suggestions?

TIA

Depends on your budget but how about this?

Pannacotta · 03/11/2013 12:13

That's lovely LadyK but our stairs run sideways so the understairs is not accessible from the hall.
Also budget it titchy, hence looking at IKEA.
Looked at this too but requires more effort to out things away...

We always had a big old chest of drawers in our hall when I was a kid, and each of us had our own drawer in it. Have a browse on eBay: you might spot something perfect. We now have the usual coat hooks (not brilliant) and a blanket box (quite good). Both need... Errr.... Editing from time to time, but the blanket box is handy when you can't train people to put things in drawers. I like the expedit stuff, but I'm not sure it'll be any easier than a chest of drawers, really.

But I think you need to choose a solution, start with it looking right, and show your family what that looks like. Then EVERY NIGHT, for as long as it takes, give everybody down-the-banks for everything they've left out of place. It's impossible to train people to be tidy if you don't start out with a clear standard to aim for!

I love old chests of drawers but I need one which is really easy to open and close or it wont get used, and you cant tell that when you buy from ebay.
Have looked locally but not found anything I like within budget.
I lso ike that bench Squinkies but its too pricey and not big enough for all the book bags/pe bags etc etc.
Possible to get a similar look with Expedit if you can be bothered with the faff (doubtful in my case)

We have this www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/60099791/
We have coat hooks on the wall just underneath it where we hang bags full of gloves, hats etc and bags. We hang coats on coat hangers from the front rail of the rack linked above. DH rides a motorbike so the top of the rack houses his helmets, but you could easily keep bags on there too. Underneath on the floor, we have a shoe rack a bit like this www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/10152639/
It all works really well, but I would prefer drawers for the gloves, hats etc!

groovejet · 03/11/2013 21:05

Can't see this at ikea website any more but we have this on the wall for coats, hats & gloves www.houzz.com/photos/255400/GREVB--CK-Hat-rack-modern-wall-shelves-

Then a small monks bench underneath for school bags and shoes.

Pannacotta · 03/11/2013 22:00

Whispers we have a coat rack its all the other stuff I need to find a home for, am not mad keen on piles of stuff on the top as it just looks messy all the time.
That said, the wooden rack would work as I could bung all the hats/gloves etc in there but cant find anything similar on IKEA any more.
groove, does your bench have a lift up lid for storing things inside?
That would be good as all the clutter would be out of sight, rucksacks and pe bag are not pretty!

we've got those fabric shoe holder pocket things in our cloakroom but I'm increasingly using them for hats and gloves at the moment. there are nicer ones in IKEA for bathroom toiletries which hook on a door etc - would that be any good?

easy to use??

groovejet · 04/11/2013 11:50

Yes the lid lifts up it is actually a monks bench style laundry box but I think it does the job was cheap from argos and is surprisingly solid this one www.argos.co.uk/static/Search/searchTerms/MONKS+BENCH.htm

OldBeanbagz · 04/11/2013 11:53

What about this?

PrimalLass · 04/11/2013 14:33

Don't buy that Cotswold one. There are only three hooks and they are today. Hugely overpriced to for the quality.

An idea i got from mumsnet was have a box each, so instead of having a box for hats, scarves and gloves, have a box for one person's shoes, hat scarf, bookbag, lunchbox etc. we now do this and it works really well as an individual can find their own things easily, and will probably come across the other things they need whilst searching.

This idea would fit nicely with your expedit plan, which i think would work well!

OldBeanbagz · 04/11/2013 15:17

We have that with outdoor/running gear in expedit. It didn't stop DH running in my tracksuit bottoms yesterday Hmm

Pannacotta · 04/11/2013 16:23

I do have small boxes for each DS but think I could arrange it better with bigger boxes (and labels) and a good sized Expedit to stash them in, as that way there would be enough space for all their mountains of stuff.
I think we would all find this easier than a chest or even a bench.
Loving the fact your DH went running in your trackies OldBean!

I have an expedit on its side so like a high-ish bench. I find it great. the fact that you can have drawers/baskets/doors is great. And it's such good value that you won't mind chuckingmoving it to another room when you do find that beautiful antique chest of drawers that your hallway is really after!

Pannacotta · 04/11/2013 21:44

Milly I quite agree, was thinking I would have it on its side so its not too in your face and it will do nicely until that antique chest comes my way!

This looks a massive bargain compared to the Cotswold one. Would look nice above a 1 x 4 Expedit.

Maryann1975 · 05/11/2013 22:42

We have an expedit and it fits everything in. We keep shoes in half of it, bags in 2 cubes and 'stuff' in the other bits. It does look massive in our small hall, but keeps clutter together and in the right place.

SlinkyB · 05/11/2013 22:55

I love Expedit; we have two units in our lounge to stash toys. I think it would work for your needs, but we actually have this farmhouse chest from Cargo in our hallway. We put shoes/boots in the bigger drawers, and all other bits in the top ones.

We were lucky to get a slightly damaged ex-display model last year for about £125 but it's on sale now - bargain!

Twooter · 05/11/2013 23:01

We have the 2x2 one - each child has a box for their school bag/ homework bags and any bits or pieces I need them to sort out. We have the dark wood one, it looks fine

Pannacotta · 06/11/2013 12:14

Slinky that does look good, I like the fact all the baskets are included in the price.
Are the baskets good quality and easy to pull out?

Re the Expedit I am wondering about the accompanying baskets/boxes/drawers as this would bump up the price quite a bit for a 4x2 unit which is what I would get.
I do have a couple of the Branas wicker baskets which are good but they are £15 each now!!
Does anyone have the Drona canvas boxes, are they ok? Or is there a better option out there...

Thanks all for your comments btw, has been very helpful.

SlinkyB · 06/11/2013 13:29

The wicker baskets do smell like a zoo animal's cage for a few weeks, and they are a bit scratchy to pull out (my ds is 2.10 and is fine pulling his top box out to get his shoes/slippers. He would struggle with the heavier bottom baskets I think).

Do you have a Cargo nearby you could go have a look?

We have the canvas drona boxes for some of the toys in our Expedit (have doors and baskets on others) and they're fine for a while, but ours is starting to show wear and tear after a couple of years. Very cheap though so I don't mind.
