Quote for new kitchen. What would you do?

Hi all
Don't post regularly but i'm a serial lurker. Hoping someone can advice me. Went into magnet today after seeing adverts for 50% off their units. I know these advertised sales are not completely honest. Chose their studio creme kitchen and was quoted £6800 after much negotiation. This is for 14 unit which includes a kitchen island, sink, integrated zanussi 5 burner hob, integrated double oven, and integrated zanussi fridge freezer. We will source integrated dishwasher and washing machine else where.

Sounded all good so paid £500 deposit with magnet coming on Tuesday to check measurement. But I'm now having doubts. Howdens are coming on Saturday to measure and give us a quote. This was arranged through our builder who will be fitting any kitchen we get.

We can only really afford about £3000 at the moment and was hoping to put the rest on interest free credit with magnet.
Are we better off sticking with magnet or do you think howden prices will come out cheaper and do howdens offer any sort of credit.

Sorry for the long post but hope it make sense.

Thanks

Gosh, why did you pay a deposit if you had not shopped around? A deposit by definition is NOT refundable, unless they tell you it is.

I would have got the quotes, get as many as you need, investigate the funding options
AND then place an order with a deposit.

Howdens will give the quote to your builder and the builder may or may not pass on the trade discount

You also won't get interest free credit at howdens

It was premature to put a deposit down although today is the last day if the financial period so they will love you

6.8k including those appliances is not way over the top in comparison to homebase/b&q etc but is going to be more than ikea, howdens trade etc

champagnesupernova2 · 02/11/2013 17:11

If your builder is doing it see if he can access magnet trade
Same kitchen about half the price
Ours looks amazing even if I say so myself (we didn't go with their crappy knobs)
Only tell tale sign is the slightly plasticky cutlery divider on the drawers

KosmoKramer · 02/11/2013 17:34

Interest free credit available at Ikea.

This £500 'deposit' business is quite common , as I found out recently when trying to obtain quoatations for a new kitchen. It's not actually a deposit as they will return it to you if you decide not to go ahead. It's more a gesture to show that you are seriously interested before they send someone round to your house to do a survey.

The OP should be able to ask for the £500 back if she doesn't go ahead.

As guide to price my new kichen is £8300 and includes

Floor tiles and laying them
Removal of wall tiles and skimming
Cost and Installation of 15 units, upstands, floating shelves and worksurfaces
Cost and installation of new sink, taps
Cost and Instalation of new gas and electic dual fuel cooker and cooker hood
Cost and Installation of new integrated dishwasher
Cost and installation of new fridge/freezer
New window ledges, new thresholds, new electrical sockets
All electrics - quite a few new/changed sockets
Paint
Removal of old units and appliances
PAT testing
All necesaary documentation

Homebase wanted over £6K for just the kitchen units!

B&Q would only tile the floor if I used their own tiles!

Howden's design was laughable!

Went with independant.

Have a look at ikea for cabinets. I would then spend a bit more on a good worktop, appliances and kitchen fitter.

zumo · 02/11/2013 20:49

W found the quality to be about the same from B&Q at £3000 to a local posh show room at £10,000!
Find who manufacturers them locally and save a fortune, we have a place locally and you see all the local fitters picking them up every day.
Based on our experience I would go to a local independent fitter and project manage the lot and save a fortne

Oh its a good point about sourcing your own appliances much cheaper some good deals on Ebay too

I had a Howdens kitchen, about five years ago. Utter shite, doors split and bubbled- it's being ripped out in a couple of weeks. I am having a kitchen built to order , by a local tradesman, I have paid for the materials direct and have paid him separately. Much cheaper than Howdens and my friend used him so I have seen hers and it's great.

I am deeply suspicious of all of the 'big' kitchen companies and their dubious trade/ retail mark ups.

I got a Magnet kitchen. Nearly had a breakdown trying to get repairs done. Kitchen looks well 12 years on. But their after sales service was diabolical.
