Painting Kitchen Wall Tiles

HALLOsolohowyouWEEN · 31/10/2013 14:10

Have you done it?
How did it look?
Was it easy to do?
Any tips or recommendations?
Lots of Q's but I want to paint my kitchen tiles as they are 25 years old + and the whole kitchen is tiled. I can't afford to re-tile, so painting seems the best option.
TIA :)

I painted bathroom tiles once. It's peeling off. You need a primer of some kind despite what the tile paint says! But it did improve the room a lot at the time.

Yes to primer. Does it go on and look smooth or do they look like they've been painted?

Any other tips/experience please?

I painted bathroom tiles in our first house. Use a mini gloss roller and it was fine - vast improvement over what was there before! I used white tile paint, no primer and it never peeled off or showed any wear at all. Easy to clean, etc. I think the key is thin layers of paint and allow to dry properly between coats.

Don't do it! I followed the instructions to the letter and had no bubbling and no other problems but it still chipped off really quickly and looked a mess.

I think because it was the kitchen the tiles couldn't withstand things knocking into them, or the scrubbing you have to do to get bolognese sauce splats off.

Save the money you'd spend on tile paint, primer, rollers and brushes and put it towards getting it retiled.

I did it as lightening said. No primer, gloss roller, thin coats and in a floor to ceiling tiled kitchen whist I saved enough to rip the whole kitchen out. It looked good (relatively...) and lasted well.

It will never looks as good as new tiles but if you decide to do it...

Use "Bin" primer first to give the paint a really good surface to stick to, then small gloss roller, you can use eggshell or gloss paint if you don't like the limited colours that tile paint comes in.

Thin coats and make sure it is really dry between coats.

Good luck.

I'd say always looks awful, I'd tile over the tiles.

Hmmmm...thanks all. Food for thought! don't think I can re-tile as my funds are limited and I only want plain white. Think I'll have a go :) Itscoldouthere what is "Bin" primer?

ForFawkesSakeNoGuyForSolo · 03/11/2013 11:21

Found it! thank you!
