Mysterious puddle in the house after storm

We moved into our current house a few weeks ago and over that time if has been very rainy with no leakage. However after the storm on Sunday night we had a puddle in the playroom yesterday. We have dried it out and it hasn't reappeared but would like to work out what caused it so that we can fix it and prevent future problems. It is in a room with a concrete slab under the wood floor (ex garage) and it does have a drain going under it but no overflow from the manhole outside. No sign at all of leakage from above, it's a 2 storey extension.

Any suggestions very welcome. Not even sure who we would get out to take a look if we need to?

Thanks very much.

Erm... How old are your children? Any pets that may have been scared by storm?!

fiorentina · 29/10/2013 09:07

We don't have any pets and no the toddler isn't potty trained! I did ask my husband if he'd slept walked!! It was definitely only water.

If you put a marble near the skirting board, does it roll to the centre of the room / where the water was? I wonder if there's a leak on an outer way, and the water pooled where you found it, having run there under the carpet. Can you get the carpet up to check for water marks?

I have had similar mysterious puddles, in the same place each time. Turns out that the roof had leaked (single story extension); the rain had run along the ceiling to the wall; then run down the wall, and as the floor is not completely flat (tiled floor) it then ran along the grouting and puddled in the centre of the hallway. By the time I got home/up, the water on the ceiling/walls had dried - hence no idea where it had come from - but the puddle remained...

Do you have a window in the room? It's possible for high wind to blow rain through the edges of the window if the seal isn't perfect. And like pp said, if you're not there to see it, the rest can dry, just leaving a puddle.

Thanks for all your ideas. It is uncarpeted, wood floor so easy to see no previous water marks. Doesn't seem uneven but will double check. Possibly came through the window but curtains were closed and not damp. Will check those bits though. Thinking it's maybe come up from the drain underneath being blocked by debris that was loosened in the storm whereas with 'normal' rain this isn't such an issue. We will investigate further.

Oddly enough, I had a mysterious puddle the other day (not during or after the storm).
Was in the kitchen 12" in front of fridge, but no water trail from fridge to puddle, so am Hmm

Also, about 4 months ago during rain found water was running down bathroom wall, where extension joins main body of house. Thought Oh No, will need to get a builder out to find the leak, BUT it has never leaked since, not even in the storm......

Am hoping it has healed itself.............. Grin

I hope ours sorts itself out too! Thank you.

I had this once, big puddle on a chair. It was wee, I'd slept walked.
