That's it really, anyone else have a really noisy meter. I have called the Hydro board and they are calling back tomorrow.

Do you mean Electric/Gas Meter ?

If so the only time I have known them to be noisy is when my neighbour was stealing my Electricity/Gas

It is electric, sorry.

is it the old type with a spinning disk and a row of little dials like clocks?

how old do you think it is?

Do you have electric heating?

PigletJohn · 29/10/2013 17:55

p.s.

Is it a buzzing noise? or a sort of scraping whir, like an old fan? Is it warm?

papalazaru · 29/10/2013 18:41

Our gas meter is noisy too and makes a sort of "whee--whee--wheee" noise whenever the boiler kicks in. I wasn't sure there was anything could be done about it....

PigletJohn · 29/10/2013 19:01

it's more usual for a gas meter to make a noise, especially when a boiler, especially a combi, is running.

I think you've got it PigletJohn. The scraping whirr. The Hydro board are coming to fix it on Friday thankfully. I think it probably is quite old.

I think they will fit a modern digital one. It may have been under-reading your usage for some time so your bills may go up.

deste · 31/10/2013 16:02

Thankyou there is solar panels on the roof so the bill are quite small.

There are solar panels on the roof.

if you have solar panels, then the old "spinning disk" meter is liable to have been going backwards at times, and should have been changed already to a modern one. They may grumble about incorrect meter readings and possibly charge for it.

Job done, it was the off peak meter.

OP posts:

I don't believe it, it's noisy again.

so you have an off peak supply.

Have you got a separate timeclock to drive the switchover?

have you got one meter or two?

have you got an electronic meter or one with rotating hands?

deste · 06/11/2013 20:42

There appears to be two or three meters, I can't remember, it's still the rotating wheel thing. Yes to off peak supply.

if you have an old installation, yopu might have a black daytime meter and a white nighttime meter, and a timeswitch to switch between them. It is much more common now to have a single <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?sa=X&hl=en&biw=1080&bih=559&tbm=isch&tbnid=WLjFHv7_ON5ahM:&imgrefurl=www.robertprice.co.uk/robblog/2004/05/reading_an_electricity_meter-shtml/&docid=sznTjICoCP3p4M&imgurl=www.robertprice.co.uk/robblog/images/electricity_meter.jpg&w=400&h=275&ei=BsZ6UtDTJMinhAfpo4DwCg&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=94&page=1&tbnh=128&tbnw=185&start=0&ndsp=20&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:0,i:88&tx=123&ty=64" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">digital meter with its own (radio controlled) timer, with buttons enabling you to look at the different readings.

I think I will phone them again.
