What kind of sink? Stainless steel or composite?

We're having a quartz worktop in white. Our appliances are black glass, what kind of sink would you go for?

Do you have any recommendations based on the durability of either? thanks! Smile

I'd go stainless steel too, especially if you have stainless appliances.

We had some kind of bastardized plastic thing. Nobody knew until a relative put a hot pan into the sink and melted the surface. I have to pay a fortune to get it smoothed out and re-coated and the coating isn't supposed to withstand a lot of sink cleaners which is stupid.

I don't know who came up with the plastic option but it was silly. Someone wanting to put a hot pan down in the sink is just going to happen at some point.

I prefer Stainless Steel – This is by far the most popular kitchen sink material. Stainless steel comes in a lot of different gauges. A higher gauge means the steel is thinner. Unlike other materials, stainless steel is actually lightweight, so even the thickest steel sink will still be lighter than a granite or cast iron model. Stainless steel offers multiple advantages. It is durable, lightweight, and easy to clean and maintain. It also comes in a lot of different finishes, so you’re bound to find one that matches your other fixtures and appliances. A downside of using stainless steel is that it can be a little noisy. Manufacturers try to cancel some of the sounds by using a special coating or rubber pads. These features considerably lower the noise produced by the sink use.

We have been told that the tap will not be stable on a stainless steel sink , that it will wobble . Does anyone else notice this ?

that could happen if it wasn't fitted properly. You can use Essex fix-a-tap washers which hold it tight if you are concerned. You want the pink pack for a steel sink.

Possibly some cheap sinks are rather thin. You will notice the difference if you lift one up in the shop.

The excellent Astracast Bistro is now discontinued but the Rangemaster Mezzo works in a similar way (fits onto the unit, no worktop under it, runs right back to the wall)

When I had my last kitchen done everyone (dad, brother, builder etc) told me I didn;t want an ugly, old fashioned stainless steel sink I wanted a nice modern black composite one.

Never again. It stains so easily (looks like rust). It's impossible to keep looking clean. Whereas my previous stainless steel one looked good as new after a quick go over with the brillo pad.

I have white marble quartz and black composite sinks. Love them to bits. They are the easiest thing to keep looking nice I have ever owned; stainless gets water marks etc and porcelain is the highest maintenance in terms of chipping and staining, but the composite looks like new after a little rinse and is hard as nails. Never have had to scrub it. I'm a huge fan.
