What to do about old stone floor?

I've been offered a council house which has old stone tiles all downstairs, hall, lounge, dining & kitchen. Will it be freezing? Will rugs keep it warm? Or should I go for carpet / laminate over the top? I could live with it in the hallway, easy to keep clean, but the lounge? I think it will be cold. I've got a few weeks to decorate before I move in but want to spend as little as possible. Any ideas?

I would go for rugs, cheapest most effective option.

and decent slippers.

Exactly as above
Rugs and slippers

I have a stone floor in the kitchen, it's not cold, I always wear slippers but it's not the problem you might think. A rug in the lounge will make it cosier and better for dcs to sit on but there's no need to be unduly concerned IMO. It is really easy to keep clean (or it doesn't show the dirt to be more accurate!!)

It is probably tiled concrete rather than stone, so should not be damp. Look out for draughts under external doors which will chill the floor. Try to keep internal doors shut in winter.

Rugs or carpets will be warmer than laminate.

Anything you drop in the kitchen will break.

Thanks everyone for all you input. So I'm going to invest in some lovely slippers for us all - and lots of rugs! Definitely cheaper than carpet :-)
