you can use Magnolia as long as you tell people it's a special Designer tint from a boutique supplier in the Cotswolds, and it's called Hippopotamus Tooth.

BraveMerida · 28/10/2013 09:50

Is there such a thing as magnolia snobbery.....?!Hmm

Dulux light and space in Nordic Spa.

I'm not sure if it's the colour or the special light reflecting stuff they claim they put in the paint and then charge more for, but it does make the room look really airy and cool without being cold.

I've tried a few times with egyptian cotton but it always looks dreary to me. I want to love it... I always go back to F&B in the end, boring I know. I currently love grey (like everyone else, wonder if it will date really badly, and I do want to be different, honest) - cornforth white, purbeck stone, ammonite, strong white... They all go together beautifully and look really warm but also cool, they seem to go everywhere. I just love them.

Also tempest from fired earth, we have it on our doors downstairs and it looks gorgeous. A nice contrast to the pale grey.

VivaLeBeaver · 28/10/2013 10:17

Dulux Meteor Showers - nice grey.

ILoveAFullFridge · 28/10/2013 10:22
Grin I know! We kept resisting, but it just worked.

It's in an odd, disjointed space, where some bits get no direct light and some parts a bathed in extremely strong light for parts of the day. The Magnolia pulls it all together and evens out the contrasts, while the rich, bright rugs add vibrancy.

And I quite fancy Dulux Azure Fusion 4 for the kitchen but need a new kitchen to match.

I make a fortune out of my artisan paint-relabelling business, where I have specially-made labels stuck on, saying "Piglet's Ear" "Devonshire Blush" "Suffolk Cream" and "Dawn Mist"

Dulux Aspen Silver. Had no idea we're apparently on trend with the grey thing. It has just a hint of purple which keeps it warm. It's lovely and DH won't stop being smug cause he picked it

DoItTooJulia · 28/10/2013 10:35

I've been through hundreds of testers!

We went for sandstone from b and q for the living room. Nice colour, crap paint.

The kitchen is currently painted mint macaroon from Dulux. It's vile. So I've been through the testers agony again, and gone for Laura Ashley duck egg. Lovely.

The hall, I want a mustard yellow ish coulor. Having trouble, but considering f and b print room yellow. Worried its a bit dirty looking.

Ilovemyrabbits · 28/10/2013 10:37

Magnolia here too. It's just a smidge away from so many different shades of colours that are deemed acceptable, but, like sherry trifle at a dinner party, it's regarded as passé. I quite like a bit of sherry trifle at times.

HouseLikeAZoo · 28/10/2013 10:41

Dulux Muddy Puddle, had it in our last two houses and love it. Lovely creamy colour, reminds me of Nesquik in milk!

Inthebeginning · 28/10/2013 10:47

our kitchen is a 1950's style so i used Laura Ashley pale amethyst. I liked it so much (and had loads left) so we're doing the bedroom in it too! Grin

wetaugust · 28/10/2013 12:04

Thanks Flossie

Does anyone know of an off-white / neutral that's a pale cream, without being yellowy or reddish beige.

I'm looking at Dulux Ivory Lace ? Timeless? Natural Calico?

Has anyone tried these?

Ilovemyrabbits · 28/10/2013 13:28

Isn't it Dulux who promise that you can change your mind on the colour, even if you've painted your whole wall with it? It might just be a certain range it applies to, but it's the ad where they paint in one shade of blue but realise it's the wrong shade. If you're struggling between a couple of colours, go with your gut and if it turns out to be wrong, try again. Dulux seem to be encouraging it!

Thinkingofmyfabfour · 28/10/2013 14:03

We have lived here 7 years and never painted a wall. They remain magnolia and I'm perfectly happy with it - it changes in different lights too! Wink
We have lots of windows looking out onto mature trees, plus various paintings on the walls so rarely even think about the colour of the paint. However our new ensuite will have no windows or paintings so I will use something other than magnolia in there!! I will be consulting threads like these for ideas

MrsPnut · 28/10/2013 14:08

We have Dulux Timeless in our front sitting room and like it so much we painted our guest bedroom in it and are about to paint the kitchen in it too. We have it paired with raspberry tones, fuschia and a sort of deep candy apple red depending on the room and we have a very old house.

It's a very versatile colour imo and I have tried just about every off white shade there is.

MrsBennetsEldest · 29/10/2013 08:57

Houselikeazoo...I love Muddy Puddle too. It makes the walls almost lickable.

OldRoan · 29/10/2013 09:51

Wetaugust have a look at Laura Ashley linen/pale linen, and pale biscuit.

The linen ones might be a bit yellow, but they are lovely on walls.

wetaugust · 29/10/2013 11:22

Thank you for your suggestions

DoittooJulia - you should check out Cats Paw from F&B.. It's an old colour so not usually stocked by Homebase et al but u can get it easily enough from F&B shops. It's like wet sand . I love it.

Monty27 · 30/10/2013 00:26

What room? Confused

I found a teal in wickes, did my kitchen in it, I loved it so much, I did it again Grin
