Moving a boiler

Our boiler is currently in the smallest bedroom in a cupboard. There is also an immersion tank in there. The bathroom is next door and I was thinking about buying a boiler that would go on the wall in there instead. What boiler would you recommend (the space is only 43cm wide). We have 2 bathrooms - one on the third floor so the pressure needs to get up to there. Would it also be very expensive and do we still need the immersion tank? Thanks

We had a new boiler installed for around £3k including new gas piping, water piping and a few new radiators and new valves on the old ones. When we had it moved a couple of years later, it cost us £1k. We've had it put into the loft which I'm pretty happy with actually - our loft has been converted, so it's tucked away in a special cupboard in the en suite of the new bedroom up there. It's a Worcester Bosch Greenstar combi boiler, has reduced our gas bills a fair bit and the pressure is good. Obviously no need for an immersion tank with a combi either (and much cheaper to run IMO). Now if you weren't using the immersion heater in the tank, and you have a large family who do a lot of bathing and you have a mixed fill washing machine then a conventional boiler with hot water tank might make more sense. But actually it sounds like a combi would be just the thing for you in terms of water requirement and space. Ours managed to give good water pressure to our first floor bathroom even when it was in the garage.

Don't forget to sell your tank for scrap.

Can I ask you when you put it in the kitchen was it in a cupboard? We have a cupboard which has the washing machine etc one side and the other side is full of cleaning stuff. I am wondering if it could fit in there but I have been told you need to access a boiler from the side - is that correct?

You need to be able to access the front, which most people manage by having a removable door in front of it. We have a panel built into ours which we can take off for servicing, and then a cupboard door for access to the controls/feed loop.

New boiler in new location is every day work to heating engineers get in 3 local reputable engineers to give you quotes and advice.
Most important make sure the installers are on Gas Safe Register and are ualified to install boilers.
You can find local heating engineers by putting in your postcode to the Gas Safe Register website.

A powerful combi might be suitable if you have good mains water pressure.
Boiler in a loft is a position of last resort - unless it is all nicely converted to a living space up there.

Boiler in cupboard - is common but it is not just that you as the user ned to be able to access front controls heating engineers need to be able to get access for servicing and repairs.

And cost of replacement boiler - very roughly most boiler replacements we do are between £1,700 and £2,900 inc vat.

Many different factors go to this big price difference including the different types of boiler.

Thank you Mrstaraplumbing - for servicing do you need to get in the side? Also if I put it in the kitchen would a combo boiler be ok to get enough pressure up to the top floor.
Will get onto some heating engineers tomorrow - you don't happen to be in London?

The heating engineers who visit you will be best to give advice on those details of your questions.
Get at least 3 people they all me recommend different things so do ask them WHY.
