How many Mumsnetters does it take to change a lightbulb?

Sadly not a joke. I have 3 wall lights in my house that look a bit like this light and take a R7 bulb. The old bulb seems to be in a glass casing which I have no clue how to remove.

Can anyone give me any pointers?

Is the casing of a size that your hand fits around? If so, try a) unscrewing it, and b) just pulling it. You sometimes find those sorts of things are just held in place by springy metal clips.

Thanks for that Brownsauce I'll give it a go now. Part of the problem is I'm too much of a shortarse I think. I can barely see over the edge of the fitting to get a proper look/grip Grin

Three.. One to get a man in to do it, and the second one to point out that she's BU to get a man in to do it.
The third one is to accuse the second one of trolling.

Still no joy, need to get a bigger ladder & thinner fingers. Or a man in Wink

if it is a halogen tube like this then you need:

a pair of cotton or plastic gloves

a step ladder

to remove, grip the tube and push it sideways, along its length. The terminals at each end have springs. If you push it to the left, you can then lift the right end, or vice versa. The glass cover will be to prevent you touching it, and to reduce the smell of burning dust, moths and spiders. The glass cover might be held on with screws.

You will have to get your steps so you can see how it is put together.
As you may know, you must not touch the "glass" of the tube with your fingers as skin oil will soak into the glass and cause it to burn out. If you do accidentally touch them you have to clean off with meths or gin and a clean tissue.

I think piglet is referring only to the new tube - you can handle the old tube. I use a tissue rather than gloves as i have none.

Did you get it to work yet Jemima?
Having Googled R7 bulbs (and bowing to pigletjohn who clearly knows his onions) that looks like the type of bulb in our old house's security light: it had springclips and needed gloves and a delicate yank pull to dislodge the old one....
