dh turned the power off to our combi boiler so that he could replace our thermostat for a fancy one.

We smelled gas part way through the job.

gas is now turned off and smell is gone. dh is completing the task.

We dont get gas leaks when we have power cuts.

Bit concerned :-/

Either call a gas engineer or get b and q and buy a carbon monoxide alarm. Gas isn't something to be taken lightly

We have a carbon monoxide alarm - that is for when gas isnt being burnt completely. We will have to call a gas engineer if the smell restarts when we put the boiler back on. (and I think I will anyway to get an engineer to give it a service and give us piece of mind). All windows open. Bit breezy in here. I'm just wondering what turning off the electrics had to do with causing a gas leak?

We had the same thing when our boiler was turned off, it turned out to be a faulty connection to the hob which we only noticed because the boiler wasn't sucking all the gas through Shock
Called the number, the Gas man came out within 2 hours and fixed it on the spot.
Hope yours is nothing though!

oh interesting! Our boiler is our only gas appliance. Seems fine now that it is back on, but it does sound like we need someone to look at it cos that aint right!

We had a gas leak and the carbon monoxide detector didn't respond to it, so please don't use that as a test to whether you have a gas leak. Gas is smelly for a reason. I phoned The national gas leak people (I had to google who to phone and still wouldnt know of the top of my head who it was) and they were excellent. They were with us within the hour and sorted the problem.

A carbon monoxide alarm does NOT detect gas laks - they are totally different.
You can smell a gas leak. - it can result in fire & explosion.
Turn off gas at the main shut down point if safe to do so and call a gas engineer.
Carbon monoxide is a deadly poisonous gas that we can't smell or see - hence th need for an alarm.
It is rally important to know the difference,

You should get your boiler serviced annually anyway, so book a service and tell the engineer about the leak too.

this makes me think of this so you get it whether you like it or not...

there was a young lady from Wales
who said 'an odour of coal gas prevails'
she then struck a light
and later that night
was collected....in seventeen pails.

MrsTP - that is exactly what we are doing :) Boiler is two years old.

Thank you Special :) very funny!

You should call the National Gas Emergency Line on 0800 111 999. They provide a 24/7 free service to anyone who suspects a gas leak and an engineer will be with you within 1 to 2 hours.

It is easy to think that a smell of gas is 'normal' in certain circumstances, it isn't.
