New front door

Sorry for the multiple posts, but we have just moved into a new house that needs lots doing to it quickly (we may want to sell within 2 years!!!).

We are going to Howdens Joinery tomorrow to look at front doors. We want a wooden one, and I've already had a joiner in to look at the job. Does anyone have any experience of front doors from Howdens? Or can recommend any other suppliers? We need one quickly!

I think we'll be going for the Chelsea M&T triple glazed one. And what does M&T stand for. by the way?
Thanks

Mortice and Tenon.

It is the "correct" way to make a strong solid wood door.

Thanks PigletJohn. I knew I could rely on you. We saw the doors at Howdens today and were impressed. About £300 (without door funiture or fitting). And he mentioned about needing to paint the top and bottom.

good. the top and bottom are the parts most prone to water penetration, and most often neglected as they are out of sight.

you will need to paint then again after the door has been fitted, because the joiner will very likely saw or plane the edges off. Get a matching hardwood water-bar and have it fixed using screws from the inside of the door which protects them from water penetration.

It will be very much easier if you have it hung on lift-off hinges otherwise you will find it very difficult to do the edges. It will be heavy. You can get lift-off hinges from Ironmongery Direct, they have them in brass or stainless, which are your two choices for an external door. The stainless ones are a bit easier to lift off due to the pin length, and sturdier. I have been very pleased with the Eclipse ones.

PigletJohn you are a veritable font of extremely useful information Smile

We are waiting for an external, glazed back door from Doordeals.co.uk. It's custom sized. They thought it would be a few weeks but it's just been 2. As well as bespoke, they do pre-hung door sets, and standard sizes. Various styles and options. Online reviews seemed promising but no personal experience yet! The prices seemed pretty good.

Hi Bea, do you mind letting me know how you get on with doordeals? I'm looking into door replacement myself.

me too, BeaTrootfull.....has your glazed back door arrived yet? What do you think of it? Doordeals.co.uk seems to have every door at a reasonable price. Just hoping the quality is good. Thanks...
