We had someone in to price quote ours and I was devastated when he said it won't fit !!we have an original fireplace with brown glazed tiles in a pretty arch on the actual hearth ( too shallow apparently) with an outer arch in the same brown glazed tiles with a large Victorian wooden style mantel.he said that we would have to remove it and even then he couldn't guarantee it would solve the downdraft that we experience at the minutewith the open fire ....what to do?

Is it me, I can't see a post from Filer777?

I would let the dream die op, unless you have deep pockets

Probably worth getting a second opinion?

I had the opposite problem.
We have a big inglenook that we wanted to have an open fire in. Various surveys & a lot of tooth sucking we were told the only option was a log burner.
I was disappointed but moved on. There are plusses & minuses to both.

Ooh, a ghost post?

If you want to keep your original fireplace AND have a stove, take a look at these inset stoves, some of which are small enough to fit standard(?) fireplace openings:

If you can't work it out, you really couldn't do better than to call the lovely people at C20 fires: they were nothing but helpful to us, especially in the midst of a crisis about whether we might have to change tack from an open fire to an inset stove. I'm sure they'll give you good advice.

could you not extend the hearth into the room a bit and have a stove protruding from the fireplace? Ours is just about flush with the fireplace but our neighbours only had a decorative fireplace so their woodburner sits on a hearth in front of the fireplace. You can get angled pieces of flue to allow it. In fact the heat transfers into the room much better with their woodburner.
