Getting Sofa Inside House

Theonlyoneiknow · 14/10/2013 22:31

Found a sofá I really like and especially the four seater one. Just worried i wont be able to get it in my house. Are most sofás designed to fit through the average doorway ? Dont want to order it then find it has to live outside!

Thanks x

Measure, measure, measure! It's not unusual to find thatthey don't fit through a front door (or can't be turned in a hall to fit into a lounge door). Patio doors help but assume you've not got them.

I've got patio doors but only one slides opens which is narrower than my front door. The four seater does come as a split option but I can't see what difference that makes to getting it inside, its just half the length? I know you tilt sofas on their side to get them in so not sure what measurement I need to take. Mwahhhhhh

The split may help as you can stand it on it's end and then rotate it through doorways.

EBearhug · 14/10/2013 23:31

Definitely measure.

I only got mine in through the front door by taking off its feet and replacing them when we were through the door. It was close. I was lucky.

We took a door off to get a sofa in, so you always have a bit more give IYKWIM. But as for which measurements to take I wouldn't have a clue!

starlingsintheslipstream · 14/10/2013 23:34

Oh yeah, we did the feet thing too!

Keep in mind that the front door might not be the squeeze point. With ours, it was negotiating the turn into the back room, where the hall is constricted by the stairs.

Measure every dimension. Make cardboard footprints of end, Side and base, and try moving them around. And even then, check with the seller about their returns policy.

Our removal men took our door off for our 3 seater sofa. When that still failed, they took out our window pane in the lounge Shock They did replace it.

We now have a tilt and turn window for ease of access Grin

Bramshott · 15/10/2013 10:13

We had to saw the bottom off our doorframe Blush. It's never going out I tell you!

WandaDoff · 15/10/2013 10:17

We had to take the arms off our sofa, fortunately it is a huge leather one so that was possible, but we've got a daft porch so it's awkward getting furniture in anyway.

Theonlyoneiknow · 15/10/2013 10:24

It is 91cm high, 234cm Wide and 97cm deep. The patio door is only 67cm Wide and 88cm high but front door is 75cm Wide.

Gah! Easiest route us in patio doors but they are too narrow and i have no idea if they can be taken off or not, i dont think so?

The split version is £100 more which i am loathe to spend but might have to. The company that makes the sofa wasnt very helpful and just said it should fit! But she also said the arms dont come off

Ours could only get in via the window. Beware!

ouryve · 15/10/2013 22:35

We've just bought a proper corner sofa (ie a 4-5 seater jobby) and with a narrow terrace with no more than a 3' square entrance lobby (so no swing room) and a right angle to get the sofa around we had to measure obsessively.

Is the sofa you want a chesterfield type, or does it have separate cushions? If it does, the back may well be a lot lower than the measurements. Ours also came with feet that were fitted after it was brought into the house. We avoided any seller that didn't give us the opportunity to have a sit and a measure in a shop or showroom (so many sofas are too low and soft for me and i have back problems, so can't deal with that)

The split option might be a worthwhile investment.

Theonlyoneiknow · 15/10/2013 22:46

It is the ashley manor Alexis 4 seater. Was looking for ages for one i could get in a dark grey. The cushions do come off the back so that, with the four seater split in two should be ok. The 2 seater is 185cm so hoping thats Fine too! The arms dont come off either of them. The retailer was very helpful and a small family Store so Fingers crossed!
