British Gas have a fee structure:

£89 - up to one hour
£249 - up to two hours
£449 - up to four hours

This includes any parts that they need to replace (ours needed a new mother board and a few knobs). It did take three visits before they fixed it though (duff parts). We were charged the middle rate in the end. The fees include VAT.

These are London rates, and are slightly higher than out of London I think.

Contact the manufacturers and ask them.
Lots of the main ones employ their own engineers. There is a one off cost for repair regardless of number of parts and work has 12 month guarantee. It will be something like £275.

You can spread the cost by paying monthly instalments and take out some sort of plan with them - covering any other faults.
Make sure you ask them for all their different financial options as they do a range of offers.

If you have any boiler covered by HEATEAM or a a vailant on a Worcester this is what I would do and what we recommend in our business.

However, if the quote given is by the person who services your boiler every year (and perhaps installed it many yeas ago - then you should probably pay him to do it.
