Talk to me about Johnstone paints please....is it as good as Dulux?

We're having our house redecorated and wanted to go for Dulux as a trusted brand of paint. The decorator came back saying they don't actually recommend Dulux, but they use Johnstones paints instead ( vinyl silk, matt and satinwood).

Not heard of them before. Is the decorator saying this because it is cheaper and he could get a better margin, or is it actually a good quality paint, better than Dulux?

Anyone have experience of painting with Johnstone paints please?

Tia

Hello, this thread is a little old and some of the links may be out of date. Users are recommending Johnstones as an alternative to Dulux. MNHQ.

Yes they are cheaper than Dulux and yes they are much better Smile

I've used them loads and decorators like using them too.

We always use it. My dad ran a building firm and always recommended. They will colour match f&b etc too.

same here. It's fine.

the Dulux dog does not work for free.

Thanks ladies. I feel more assured that the decorator is not just trying to go for cheap and nasty.....but that Dulux sheep dog is cute though.

I've been on it lately... Really good stuff. Recommended by a pro who wasn't decorating our place, so no vested interest. The acrylic matt is nice to work with, proper matt, and good and thought. Their oil based eggshell is reAlly lovely.

Dulux dog is nice, but a bit high maintenance for my tastes!

Unsure, is the paint still wet in your pic?
When it is dry it should not look as uneven as that.
If it dries like that, cut your losses and buy a new tin of paint. Personally I would not recommend "pure brilliant white" as it looks harsh unless everything around it is perfect. There are lots of recommendations around, I would go for Dulux Timeless for a cool white and Almond White for a warmer shade but that's personal preference
