Problem with Worcester Bosch Greenstar after being moved

I can't remember if I whined mentioned the problems we had with the original plumber who was supposed to move our boiler. But by way of back story, it's a two year old Worcester Bosch Greenstar 28cdi, originally installed in our garage, now in the new loft conversion. Original plumber totally screwed up moving it, rotten pipework, condensate pipe emptying onto floor, leak under the bathroom floor, our kitchen ceiling came down in the middle of the night. That sort of thing. So the builder got someone to come and fix it up and it's been basically fine until last night. Turned the heating on for half an hour then turned it off and it didn't go off. It's a wireless controller and we can hear a click inside the boiler when you turn it on and then off again but the boiler keeps chugging away. In the end I just turned the central heating off on the boiler itself but I have no idea what the problem is, whether it's the controller or if the bad plumber did something terrible to my boiler.

Any ideas? This happened to anyone else? Seems a bit of a coincidence that a week after it was moved it had gone a bit peculiar.

It's probably the pressure.

if it goes on and won't go off it won't be pressure. On a system which has a cylinder, I would suspect the 3-port valve (which is operated by the room stat, and itself has a switch that turns on and off the boiler). I presume yours has no cylinder. So it might be a wiring fault, perhaps a new loose connection; or it might be that the wireless stat receiver at the boiler is not working correctly.

Do you have a separate timer/programmer, or is it a programmable thermostat?

I am not keen on wireless stats as they add anoher two potential points of failure.

A competent Gas Safe heating engineer should be able to trace and fix the fault fairly easily. If you hve confidence in the person who moved it, start with him.

p.s.

I expect it has a frost stat, especially important as it's now in the loft, which keeps the boiler and pipes hot if it considers itself to be in freezing conditions. It is possible, but not very likely, to be that. If it is, it overrides any timer you may have.

Ooh, thanks, I had sort of come to the conclusion that the wiring is a bit loose/not quite right. The guy who moved it originally seemed to have trouble with the wiring and I'm not sure the nice guy did anything to the wiring, he was just tidying up pipework mostly. So I'll call him on Monday and ask if he can pop back.

I pulled the wireless controller off the wall and took it upstairs to check that it wasn't too far away, changed the batteries in it and it still won't turn off. We have no cylinder (I really miss my conventional boiler and cylinder sometimes, it was so much more self-serviceable) so no 3-port valve to get stuck.

It does have a frost stat, which used to kick in quite a bit when it was in the garage. Loft is lovely and warm at the moment so I don't think it's that. The light isn't flashing or anything, it just stays on all the time. Not very economical!

we have just had the chap out to fix our greenstar, rolled his eyes and said 'bloody wireless thermostat' !! replaced this and it's working perfectly, the new wireless thermostat works Upto 20 metres away

MummytoMog · 28/10/2013 07:55

We're just living with it at the moment until the plumber comes back out to do the rest of the work in a month or so. Pretty sure it's the thermostat so just using the manual control. Annoying not to have heat in the morning though.

it may be worth speaking top plumber to see if he can bring thermostat with him, they had to order us 1 it took a couple of days to come through, good luck, remember temps are dropping this week

My brother was just over (he's an electrician, part p and all that crap) chain sawing up the tree that fell into my garden. He nipped up to have a look at the boiler. Turns out the receiver wasn't connected. And was shoved up inside the boiler. Anyway, connected now (was just a loose wire) and it's working! Hallebleedinlujah. No more freezing mornings for me :). And also there is no longer a tree on my shed.

ARGH THE FUCKING THING iS CONTROLLED BY NPOWER FROM AFAR. Ahem. That appears not to have been the problem as I just went upstairs and it was chug chug chugging away, despite the controller being set to off. So off at the boiler it goes again. What the fuck is wrong with the thing. You can see the light on the receiver clicking on and off, and the boiler clicks off, but then it clicked itself back on again like Christine.

I just want to wake up to a house that isn't freezing. I only have three functional walls at the moment and a bit of heating would be bloody nice in the morning.
