Engineered floorboard on top of original floorboards

My house is SO cold in the winter, sometimes colder inside than outside. It is an Edwardian semi. A lot of drafts come through the floorboards. Would laying a new floor (engineered oak) on top of the existing floorboards help?

Yes, almost certainly. Just covering up the floor will massively reduce the drafts, and the underlay will help a bit too. Of course, depending on the state of the walls, windows, front door and loft insulation, the drafts floor may be a relatively minor part of the overall problem. There's a detailed calculator on the energy saving trust website where you can guesstimate the main heat losses in your house... It even estimates the costs and savings of various solutions so you can weigh up what would work best for your house.

We've got engineered floorboards throughout our Victorian house. We took all the old boards up though, as they are nailed to the joists. I think that gives a smoother result.

We have no gaps, we also replaced all the skirting boards at the same time, so that the skirts are flush with the floor.

We had a couple of days where we had to go out of the front door and come in the back door to get to the kitchen, when the hall was being done.
