Is it possible to lay a wood floor straight onto tiles without a frame below? Glue?

This really. Don't want the back breaking job of lifting the tiles up but equally don't want raise the level of the floors too much. Would it work to glue the wood on? what about expanding and contracting? TIA

I'm not an expert but, providing the tiles are level and you put down some of that (very thin) roll-out insulation first, I don't see why not. Most wood floors are either nailed, glued or clicked together rather than glued to the floor below.

Thanks. Not sure how I am going to nail them together? Really don't want to be hacking up though. There must be a forum for DIYers. hmmm

Sorry, obviously they are nailed to the floor beneath when using nails but alternatives are to glue or buy a clip together type of floor (usually engineered rather than solid). The floor shouldn't expand or contract unless it gets wet or it hasn't been acclimatised (not sure that is the right word) properly or UFH is used in some areas and not others.

Oh ok. Planning on panting the wood so would rather not have engineered. What's UFH?????

I think you are talking about a floating floor. It usually sits on a foam layer, and all the T&G are glued so it forms a single sheet. It is not nailed down. It needs gaps round the edges for expansion. AFAIK they are always done in "enginered wood" which moves less than solid.

I presume you mean it is a concrete floor with tiles on it, otherwise it would be easier to take the tiles up.

There must be a forum for DIYers

Yes, its concrete with very thick tiles on top. Really want proper wood - will have a nosy at that site Piglet, thanks.

UFH = under floor heating

Ah, thanks. Radiators already there. Should have guessed though!
