Are house names naff?

We're buying a newly built house on an old road where most of the houses have names, not numbers.

It hasn't been officially named/numbered yet and we are trying to decide between it being 32a (which is a bit of a rubbish number) or giving it a name.

Part of me thinks names are twee and silly, but part of me thinks what's the point of calling it 32a if there aren't also numbers next door?

Has anyone seen any non-twee house names to help inspire me?

Ice Cream - my in laws did similar, but in their case they took their first names, and those of their kids, shortened them all and somehow rammed them together. Was so awful, didn't even begin to resemble a word of any description. They thought it was dead classy though. WinkWink

you will always be dunroamin, 2 privet drive, whatever the council say. and i'm really sorry but whenever i see that i do think its a bit nouveau... dont whatever you do call it "the coach house". that would make it even worse.....

BaronessBomburst · 24/09/2013 14:43

If the neighbours' houses are named, not numbered, I would name the house too.

I like 'The New House'.

DF named our house after his employer; he translated the company name into Latin. It was really number 54. DB and I were children at the time and were dead impressed. Not so, looking back! Grin

I'm well naff, I would definitely have a name in your circumstances. "New House" is good, or have a look on old maps and see what the field name was before anything was built. It just sounds so much more convenient if the postie is having to do the rest of the road by name.

My parents house has a hundred year old name and a very confusing number (it's two cottages knocked into one), but they are classy to the point of ridiculousness and use the confusing number, the fools.

Wallison · 24/09/2013 14:48

Nosmo King is a classy kind of name.

ClementineKelandra · 24/09/2013 14:49

The house at the end of my road is called 'Chippy View' :)

SconeInSixtySeconds · 24/09/2013 14:58

Our village only has names - no numbers at all - but that seems fairly common around here.

There is Y Not House (yy really) that I drive past in another village that always makes me grin grimace...

Alfiecat · 24/09/2013 15:07

Our house only has a name as do a few of the other houses around us. Some have numbers though. It makes it hard for anyone to find you as they can't just follow the numbers and as the road splits left and right as well, it all gets very confusing!

Alfiecat · 24/09/2013 15:09

Last week the pizza delivery guy had to ask a neighbour which one was ours. So now the neighbours know we order home delivery pizza!

MadBusLady · 24/09/2013 15:11

God knows what the neighbours think of us. Our pizza AND curry delivery guys know us by name.

Told you i was naff Grin

RunDougalRunQuiteFast · 24/09/2013 16:44

Our house is Victorian but the name hasn't been used since the war .... Brookside Villa!!! It is opposite a stream but still naff today, thanks Channel Four.

ShoeWhore · 24/09/2013 20:36

My house has a name but no number along with the rest of the road. I really like it Smile

Name+number is a bit naff though sorry.

Just pick a name carefully. We don't have a problem with people finding us, it's fine.

mummaemma · 24/09/2013 20:51

yeah name your home. My house has a name and number as a victorian house. its called "oakfield"

mummaemma · 24/09/2013 21:00

carolmillen · 24/09/2013 21:02

My house had a name when I bought it but I've since changed back to a number. It doesn't work well on a standard estate/road.

DownyEmerald · 24/09/2013 21:05

God- Casa Bevron - now that's an actress I haven't seen in anything else since.

When my mum and dad built a house Dad wanted to call it The Banks', as it was mortgaged to the hilt. But the plot had a name, and we'd got so used to using that name whilst it was being built we just couldn't get used to calling it anything else.

I think it must be really difficult to name a house from scratch. Lots of people seem to go for their favourite holiday place. Which to me is really bizarre - we drive past Gorran Haven on the way to the Malverns. And I had a boyfriend whose house was Tenby - in land-locked Shropshire.

Vulgar · 24/09/2013 21:08

There's some strange house names in the villages around me. My favourite is Mushroom Cottage but you can't see it from the road. I imagine Noddy's house.

There's also a unremarkable red brick house called "Utopia" and weirdest of all is a terraced farm cottage called......Naturist.

Name it - Villa Schmalex has a good ring to it!

itried · 24/09/2013 21:23

I love in a classy street - not one house has a name. Unless you live in Buck House or Castle Howard, names are naff!

culturemulcher · 24/09/2013 21:52

itried if your house has had a name for 100+ years, isn't it more naff to decide to number it?

SkivingAgain · 24/09/2013 22:07

We built a house on a plot in a village and all around us had house names so we did too - the collective noun for animal that we share our name with (cringe Blush). Now we just use the number. when we shop online only the numbers come up, but we built pre-internet so neighbours must do the same.

DwellsUndertheSink · 24/09/2013 22:15

there's a house not far from us called "Plod Cottage" - a former police station....Grin

We live in a XXXX cottage but as the house is 250 years old, I think its allowed...eventhough its not really a cottage but and ancient semi.

wildblueiris · 07/10/2017 10:22

We Brits are so concerned with what other people might think of us!
We are terrified of being thought pretentious and we imagine that naming our house is pretentious because it is what the upper classes tend to do.
Time to break free and follow our own logic in my opinion!
Go for a name - why ever not?
According to this Telegraph article and other information, giving your house a name adds value. (Obviously important to avoid off-putting names though - 'Crematorium View' not likely to do it, however accurate).

Why resurrect a four year old thread to post? Hmm

DeepInFrance · 08/10/2017 15:04

Fine if it's Chatsworth or Blenheim. Otherwise, naff.
