Help me convince DH that we need a gas fire, not electric!

I have sadly given up on my wood burner dream as we have no flue and it would be too expensive to fit one.

As there is no flue the options are a) balanced flue gas fire, good heat output, efficient, pricey, or b) electric fire, not so good heat output, much cheaper. There is gas to the fireplace already.

I want a, dh wants b.

My main concern with electric is noise. We had an electric fire once and it was like sitting in front of a hair dryer.

Do you prefer gas or electric.?

The optimyst fire was recommended on here recently.

We are just getting a woodburner installed in our living room where the chimney is,but have a gas balanced flue in the family room and it is very effective.

To be fair, electric fires have probably moved on a bit since then, so to give them a fair crack of the whip, you'd need to see (or hear!) them in operation. On the other hand, the gas fire will be cheaper to run...

Yes, the noise of electric fires is horrible. No matter how convincing their 'real fire' credentials, it's impossible to suspend belief with the whirring noise. And every electric real fire I've ever seen looks nothing like a real fire.

Gas versions are nicer, much nicer.

We had an electric fire about 7 years ago.. It was a top of the range one. More heat came off the TV than the fire..

We swapped an electric fire for a gas one. It just didn't heat the room up enough.

IHeartKingThistle · 20/09/2013 09:43

This is brilliant - I might just convince him on running costs!

And if you're in an area at all prone to power cuts, so long as it's one you can light with a match and isn't electronically controlled, a gas fire will work if you have no electricity.

Just swapping gas for a woodburner. However, the gas is actually far nicer than I had expected. I would definetely have gas if that was my only option. It's still very cozy!

RedHelenB · 20/09/2013 19:06

Definitely gas in case of power cuts!
