Panicking slightly...

Finally finally have made an offer on a house. We are late FTB for a variety of reasons, and it has finally dawned on me that this will not be my perfect, dream house, but a first step on the ladder. The house is good but on a dodgy road (ex-council)

We could forever looking and the reality is that we can afford this house and still live. We could afford more, but where we live the next tier of houses seem not very impressive for too much money.

Please reassure that we are doing the right thing!!

Not helping!

DH doesn't mind the location - just me wobbling about it.

we used to live in an ex-council. My partner bought it before I knew him and I moved in later. It was on the edge of an estate with a reputation, which turned out to be unjustified. We never had any problems and all our neighbours were lovely. So there is no reason to think that ex-council is dodgy, but is there anything else about the street that sets alarm bells ringing? - graffiti, unkempt gardens or gardens fill of junk, undesirables hanging around etc...?
Do you know the area well? Why not just spend some time on the street (pref in the car!) at different times of the day and week?

soverylucky it's not you it's me Smile

I am just panicking - I didn't think I would be. I have wanted to be a house, and feel grounded for so long, but now we have made an offer I am finding myself terrified of making a mistake! This is an unexpected reaction to something I thought I really wanted.

Realistically, it is a good house, a good first step. There is one family several doors down whose house seems untidy, but the rest looks fine.

Do a stake-out in your car on the street at various times of day and night to get a feel for the area, if there are loud parties on a Tuesday night, gang of kids hanging about as soon as it gets dark etc.

You could also knock on a few neighbours' doors and explain who you are and ask about the area, is it friendly? What are the shops like? Travel links?

It might set your mind at rest. Hope it all works out for you!
