Would you expect a decorator to apply 2 coats of paint?

Just that really, would you expect a decorator to apply 2 coats of paint in a bathroom? I can still see smudges of previous colour and before I pay the bill I want to work out if I'm being too fussy? I presume they only applied one coat. Tia

At least 2, if not three -basically however many are needed to cover fully

cheryl19843 · 12/09/2013 12:02

Definitely would've thought they'd apply as many as needed. Or else why would you pay a professional when you could do half a job yourself!

Mintyy · 12/09/2013 12:02

Yes, two at least. Or until good, even coverage is achieved. Stick to your guns!

noddyholder · 12/09/2013 12:02

As many as needed to cover it and have a good finish. Just ask him to go over it again If you can see it he will too!

PatioDweller · 12/09/2013 12:03

Yes, at least 2. When we had a light colour applied over a dark one our decorator did 4 coats but he said it would need 3 or 4 when he quoted so we knew what we were getting. How many coats does your quote state? I certainly wouldn't be paying if I could still see the previous colour through the new one.

Wow, thanks for all your replies, I'm clearly not being fussy. I shall contact them now, before they send the bill. Thanks mumsnetters!

If they are capable of giving a good finish with one then that's fine. Most people can't though, so I would expect two.

Periwinkle007 · 12/09/2013 14:18

yes I would probably expect 2. sometimes the one coat paints if being painted over a similar or neutral colour are fine with one coat but otherwise I think 2.

did they provide the paint? I am only asking because we had some very cheap white paint and it took me 6 coats to paint over magnolia with it because the paint was so thin.

Ifcatshadthumbs · 12/09/2013 14:21

Yes absolutely as a minimum. Generally when we paint we do a coat of white first then 2 coats of the new colour, 3 if necessary.

50shadesofmeh · 12/09/2013 14:39

Yes my dads a decorator and always 2 coats at least. I try to do one coat sometimes doing my house and he hates it and won't let me.

Had no response from decorator yet but I'm gonna stick to my guns, thanks for your replies!
