Do gold/brass light switches & sockets look cheap??!!

Decor and style wise I think they will match best for the house we are currently doing up prior to moving in - but do they look a bit naff/cheap? Also should they ideally match the carpet trims or is that just being a bit OTT?! Advice pls ;-))

if you have white ones they will be invisible.

If you must have brass. get the plain flat ones, not the sort with fancy edges.

Your carpet trims will be anodised aluminium and will not match the brassware.

Why not get antiqued brass or Nickel? Like Forbes and Lomax style dolly switches. I am guessing a period house... Maybe wrong. You can also get invisible switches that are clear...

Its not that, people are taking out chrome esp matt and putting in brass or shiny chrome. Matt is very low rent or OAP bungalow gone a bit jazzy Keep up!

I think they look ok if they have some sort of patina like these ones but the very shiny ones make me think of 1980s gin-and-Jag chic.

My main worry would that they could be hard to match with other things - eg what if your light fitting has a chrome base - and for me I don't know if I'd want them to really have a style, more just be invisible .

But you know what - if you are the one living there, go for what you will enjoy looking at!

I think brass anything looks horrid, but especially light switches.

Depends completely on the decor and house - do you live in a 16th century chateau with lots of expensive silk embossed wallpaper [head tilt].... ?

lalalonglegs - I actually really like those and I've saved the link. Think they'd look really nice in my Victorian house (particularly the dolly switches) and much better than the plastic white sockets and switches :). I don't think they're naff if they're in the right house. I wouldn't have considered them in my last house as it was modern and shiny. At the end of the day, if you like them and they match your property, go with it.

I don't think Noddy is entirely correct. I'm still specifying a lot of brushed stainless steel, as it is quite neutral and suits a certain look. However I agree in other situations it looks naff.
I think trying to be on trend with light switches is daft at best. Pick something that you like, goes with your taste and work from there.
I've got brushed stainless steel in a Victorian house, replacing a mishmash of tarnished brass, white & chrome. It suits the light & decor and doesn't mark to badly.

I agree with Wonky - pick something you like, forget what's in fashion and have the same style throughout rather than a mixture. Brushed/matt is a plus as it doesn't show the finger prints. I used to have the really shiny switches and spent forever wiping them.
