CH programmer

We've been having only the hot water side of the programmer switched on. Now that it's colder and the heating is on can we put the hot water to Off? Does the heating being on heat the water?
Apologies for the less than clear question.

you can have CH and HW on separately, unless

  • you have a rather old Gravity HW system, or a solid fuel boiler which needs an escape to prevent overheating, or
  • you have a faulty, or badly designed, system.

Thanks Piglet. What I meant was...... Does the water heat when the heating is on? Could the hot water side of the programmer be switched off? Or must both sides of the programmer be switched to on?

The programmer is the Drayton one you linked to on another thread. Embarrassed at my ignorance!

if you want CH, you turn the CH on. If you want HW your turn the HW on. Whichever is turned off will be cold, unless you have a fault.

If the boiler is running to heat the CH, then you may as well let it heat the cylinder at the same time. the cylinder has, I hope, got a thermostat strapped to the side, so will not overheat. If it is well insulated, it will stay hot until used (or for more than a day)
