Found the perfect gas fire but it costs scary money - anyone seen anything similar that won't break the bank?

It's this with logs. I love everything about it but it would totally blow our lounge budget.

Has anyone seen anything similar?

How much is it?

IHeartKingThistle · 10/09/2013 11:06

Just under 2 thousand is the cheapest I can find!

Are you definitely after gas? What is your budget? I went to a trade thing re fires a year or so ago and there were some amazing ones at £1k or less

IHeartKingThistle · 10/09/2013 13:47

There's a gas fire there already, no chimney, had electric once and it was just like a hairdryer so thought gas would be the way forward. Budget is up to 1K but ideally a bit lower!

You can get something called a Verine shelf fire for about £500 and put it in a space that a plasterer can do for you. They come in a few sizes with coals or logs I think. Otherwise I can really recommend the Dimplex optimyst electric ones they look amazing and really warm

PigletJohn · 10/09/2013 15:36

did you say no chimney? where will the fumes and steam go? Your link says "fit the UK chimneybreast"

It isn't a flueless fire, is it?

If it is a balanced flue then presumably the flames and logs will be sealed behind glass, which does not look convincing.

IHeartKingThistle · 10/09/2013 18:47

No real brick chimney, it's vented out the back or something (external wall). There's a fire there already so I'm guessing it's OK! Yep that one is a balanced flue behind glass - I'm now thinking open fronted would be better - less efficient but cheaper and more convincing, as you say.

I like this one - no idea if it's suitable though, or who to ask. Fire shop? Gas engineer?

Off to google your suggestions noddy - thanks Smile

open fronted needs a chimney, as it is not room-sealed, though I believe there are a few with complex fanned ventilation.

PigletJohn · 10/09/2013 19:09

eeeek!

your link appears to be a flueless one, which vents the steam and fumes into the room.

You will be unlucky to find a registered gas engineer who is willing to install it. Even though there have been hardly any deaths from them poisoning people with the fumes. I am sure the company selling them will tell you not to worry about that as it shouldn't happen.

PigletJohn · 10/09/2013 19:10

unless something is wrong.

PigletJohn · 10/09/2013 19:11

sorry, my mistake, I panicked. The one in the link needs a chimney

IHeartKingThistle · 10/09/2013 20:05

I'm confused now! Which one needs a chimney? We might be happy to change the flue (though I'm not building a chimney!).

Am I really going to struggle to get a gas fire in that style, even though there's already a gas fire in place?

this one says:

"Suitable for class 1 chimneys or class 1 & 2 125mm prefabricated flues"

If no chimney, I think you will have to get either a glass-fronted balanced flue, or a fanned flue that blows the fumes through the wall.

IHeartKingThistle · 11/09/2013 19:50

OK so it's balanced flue behind glass then - looks like the only choice. Looking at the heat output we won't need a big fire at all but the smaller version of my first link is still £1500. I really want a completely frameless 'hole in the wall' style look and I can't find anyone else making those with balanced flue.

Just can't decide if it's worth the outlay.

if there is no chimneybreast, I don't think you can have a "hole in the wall" fire. It would be outside the house.

IHeartKingThistle · 12/09/2013 22:49

Sorry, should have said, we're building a false wall to house the fire and some alcoves.

PigletJohn · 12/09/2013 23:45

that's interesting

can you post some photos when it's done?

IHeartKingThistle · 13/09/2013 10:07

If it ever gets done!

How about this one:-

I've had a fire without and with glass and much preferred with with glass version.
