Hi, theres such great advice on here for all things kitchen related so please can I have some help. DH and I are in the process of buliding a new house after tolerating damp and creepy crawlies for too many years. I am SO looking forward to my new kitchen and am in the planning stage. I enjoy baking and cooking and had decided to get a range cooker (90cm size), figured I would put it to good use and enjoy it but today was talking to someone who has had one for a few years and she said it was a total waste of money for her and would get 2 eye level ovens instead. DOnt know her very well so dont know how interested she is in cooking but it has made me question is it the right thing to get as will be v expensive. I have used MILs 30 year old cooker these last few years so realise that the size and age of the cooker doesnt really matter in the scheme of things. Hope this isnt too much of a rambling post, sorry bit sleep deprived with new DD. Any words of advice on how you decided to get one or not would be appreciated. Thanks FF

I wouldn't. I cook a lot, and am very happy with my eye-level ovens and an induction hob.

I wouldn't. I love baking and cooking and hate the range oven we inherited with our current house, despite it being a big, supposedly desirable range master.

It is impossible to keep clean, it has 5 gas rings and a hot plate things on top. So many books and crannies for bits of food. I would have my induction hob back in a heartbeat. We don't utilise all the cooking space, the hot plate thing is a total waste. I would either get two cookers mounted one ok top of the other on the wall, each or one with a grill (the top one if only one).
Then get an induction hob separately. Other option is to get two ovens side by side under a counter with one large , or two standard induction jobs on top. It will be cheaper and will have much more usable space. I want to get rid of ours but as the kitchen has been built around it it would be an awkward size to replace without getting another similar range. Will have to wait for a full kitchen overhaul!!

Oh thanks for replying, I am going to go and have a look at all the options again and then decide. Its heart vs head again .....

We had a Rangemaster in our old house (moved in March). It was 900mm, had five burners, two ovens and a separate grill. I loved it and miss it so much . In the new house we have a built in oven with an integrated grill and for the life of me, I can?t understand why anyone would buy an oven with an integrated grill. We are re-doing the kitchen next year and I will be getting another range but this time it will be an 1100mm. I love how much I could cook in it and I honestly believe that it cooked stuff better too. I am hosting Christmas dinner for 14 this year and am already working out my time table so I can cook everything in my (crappy) current oven.

I had a range in our old house and was only to glad to leave it behind. Looked great but that was about it.
Doing our new kitchen now with eye level ovens & separate hob.

wonkylegs · 09/09/2013 17:42

Meant to say I'm into cooking a lot and although I got used to the range for baking and catering for big dos I spent a lot of time swearing at the impracticality of it.

MrsAMerrick · 09/09/2013 17:50

we inherited a huge Rangemaster with our current house -110cms, two full size ovens etc. Lived with it for 7 years and then, when we upgraded kitchen this year, got rid of it in favour of eye level oven, combinaation microwave oven (built in) and induction hob. If I had the space for 2 eye level full size ovens I'd have gone for that instead, but don't regret what we have done at all. Don't miss the Rangemaster at all.

myron · 09/09/2013 18:34

Eye level double oven with separate induction hob AND a gas wok burner. Family of 4 here - I only ever use all of the double oven a handful of times in the year when we entertain family/friends. Considered a range when we planned our kitchen but decided that I'd rather save my knees from all the additional bending down just to check whatever is baking in there. Definitely the right decision for me.

I nearly got a range, but figured that two Neff ovens would give greater capacity. And, more importantly, they are amazing. They do what they say they'll do, cakes are a bit dull tbh because they just cook nicely! I make a lot of bread, they can get crazy hot, which makes amazing pizza. And they clean themselves. What is not to love! The downside is that they are all technological looking and I would have loved a twee pastel range. But I'm glad we went all practical.

I have a 90cm induction range by Stoves, which I've had since April and I love it. The smaller oven is big enough to cook a roast chicken and roast potatoes, and although the tall oven is narrow, I can cook 4 trays of biscuits etc in there. I probably would choose an eye level if I could fit one in, but I can't, but I'm very happy cooking on this one and it looks fab
