Can anyone describe moving house using a packing service?

We are moving house at the end of the month, from a three-bedroom to a four-bedroom house in the same road. I am in the process of getting surveys from companies to do the packing and moving for us. Can anyone give me any information or tips on using a packing service? For example are there any specific things I should pack myself such as undies or jewellery? Do they unpack at the other end or just leave you with a big stack of boxes? What's an appropriate amount to tip? Do I stay out of their way or will they need advice on anything? Are they going to be happy to pack up children's toys and book shelves or should I do that myself?

Last time we moved by ourselves and it was absolutely awful so I'm glad to let someone else do the work this time but some tips would be very helpful.

I have moved soooo many times in the past 10 years or so. I always use Aussie man and van (I'm based in London) and I always get them to pack up for me (but not to unpack). I really rate them and would recommend them to anyone. The last time we moved my daughter was 5 weeks old and i was constantly breast feeding and the men were just so lovely and sensitive and helpful to me. Good luck with your move!

Can I just say that this was a service that I'd never used before. But will now. It sounds amazing. Just. Amazing. Grin

F Smith and son moved us and were amazing. They are based in Croydon.

Sorry for late response. We used a company based in SE London called Smile Moves.

There is another company with the same name so be sure to use the right one!

We for three quotes, one for £2.5k, one for £2k and then £900 from smile moves which was the only one of the three we had actually been personally recommended. So def shop around as the cheapest isn't necessarily bad.

Worth every penny and its not as much as you think it might be. Yes empty food cupboards & the fridge and look under the beds (oh the shame). Last time the only problem was they wouldn't clear out the loft as it only had ladder access. It took me and both DS about a week of hard work to shift the startling amount of boxes and deliver them to the dump! 5 years on there is NOTHING in the loft at the new house.
Put your do not pack stuff in the car while they get on - its safer.

Do it!

They are amazingly quick. Be clear what isn't to be packed but I'm never packing again when we move.

Ha, yes they do pack everything. We had an overseas move and the container rolled up to our door with a unknown very large package. They had packed a few set those mega cheap ikea floor to ceiling pine shelves you use for garages and basements etc - all assembled. I still can't believe they actually packed them.

It is totally worth the money. We do tip though, especially as havecused the same small family company a few times.
