Wood burner in victorian house

We moved into a Victorian house which has had the original fire surrounds removed and replaced with B&Q surrounds and gas fires.

We want to replace these with wood burners but have no idea how to make this look OK in a period property.

The Drawing room is quite large, with bay window, picture rail and
coving so I think anything too modern will look strange.

Have you done this successfully? Or have you seen a picture of it done well?

Your thoughts and ideas would be really helpful, thanks!

I have one in my sitting room and it looks fab. I've no idea how to stick a picture on here, sorry. The walls are white and the it's inside the chimney space which is exposed brick.

Do you have a surround?

This might work. www.flickr.com/photos/101267276@N02/

The bricks are black as there used to be an open fire there. I've given up trying to clean them.

LadyM thank you so much, it looks lovely!

It is Grin It pumps the heat out though.

iWillDoItInAMinute · 04/09/2013 12:15

That's what I'm hoping for Grin

Our house gets -really bloody- cold by the end of October and the gas fire is very old and quite scary! Every time I put it on I'm surprised I still have eyebrows Grin

Oh, that's not good! There's threads on here about log burners. You need to check your chimney is lined or something. You can get multi fuel ones which will use coal Grin

iWillDoItInAMinute · 04/09/2013 12:30

Thanks for the thread info. Do you have multi fuel or logs only?

Ours is basically like that, but we rendered the inside of the fireplace and painted it a soft grey (to cover up my dodgy rendering). And our stove is cream. I have attempted to put a picture on my profile, but it may have all GONE WRONG.

Mummytomog, my tablet won't let me view your profileConfused

So I would need to remove surround, back panel and gas fire, see what it's like behind. Sort out brickwork, repoint or render/paint. Check chimney, get liner and install stove

I have been told that it costs about £2000 does this seem about right?

I was just about to post a very similar thread - how funny!

I have just had a quote for £2,500 (incl. the VAT) - which includes the stove, lining the chimney, rendering, new marble for the hearth (to match the bit that is already in situ) - so yes, £2k excl. vat is about right.

I am not sure how it's going to work - at the moment we have a traditional Victorian fireplace with wooden mantelpiece, but that will have to go as it's a small room and the wood will be too close to the opening....I hope that it doesn't look too weird, but the previous occupants removed a lot of the original features, so the house is a bit of a hotchpotch anyway.

MummytoMog · 04/09/2013 13:35

Mine was more like £1500 but we put a cheap liner in (which I regret now as will probs need replacing in a few more years) and we had no surround to remove, there was just a gas fire plugged into the bricked up hearth.

My profile might not be public. I'll see if I can turn it public.

iWillDoItInAMinute · 04/09/2013 13:54

Thanks MummytoMog, it looks really cosy Envy

Panicmode are you hoping to get it done this year? We are very slow at getting work done in the house. I can see us removing everything and not getting a stove in til next spring/summer Grin

Yup, booked it in for the first week in October, so madly clearing space for some logs now!
