a big butler style sink with a good draining board - fantastic for hand washing, putting things to soak, filling buckets, washing cleaning stuff etc. Washing machine, tumble drier, tall cupboard for storing ironing board and airing rack, space to dry clothes, and lots of storage.

morethanmama · 04/09/2013 14:04

This is so helpful - keep them coming!! How big is your space?

Ours is about the size of a boxroom. It houses:

Washing machine (we don't have a drier although it would fit).
Iron, ironing board.
Clothes horse/airer, whatever they're called.
Three recycling bags (paper, plastic, glass).
Christmas decs (two big plastic boxes plus three big
Christmas tins that once held panettone ), plus Christmas tree.
Shoes.
All cleaning products.
Mop and bucket.
Brush and dustpan.
Gas boiler.
Sink.
Two boxes of toys for DS that we have bought in the sales or have been given, that are a bit too old for him - that's birthday and Christmas 2014 sorted!
Big shelf unit stacked with ^^ and also.things like toolbox, cushions for outdoor chairs, picnic paraphernalia (for eating, we don't have table/chairs),
bulk purchases such as BOGOF bogg roll (haha!), 6 pack of milk where only two bricks are in the fridge.

You get my dift.

elQuintoConyo · 08/09/2013 21:02

Oh, and boxes for things like cd player, modem, mobile phones; we keep them for about a year, with the receipt in a small baggy sellotaped to the side in case we have to take them back/repair them.

spiderbabymum · 08/09/2013 21:10

A laundry chute

Chubfuddler · 08/09/2013 21:13

Ideally an external door and gives onto the kitchen
Big sink
Space for large fridge freezer, washing machine and rumble dryer
Boiler so secondary heat can be used to dry the clothes on a Sheila maid
Extra kitchen cupboards for overflow food storage
Pet paraphernalia

This is not what I've got. I haven't got one at all. This is whst I used to have

FishfingersAreOK · 08/09/2013 21:16

Ours is teeny-tiny. Has a downstairs loo off it (also teeny-tiny) and a back door. So only about 150cm square space to actually use IYSWIM

Have tried to make the most of it and the washer and dryer on top of each other in the corner. Then a big 60 cm wide tall shelved cupboard for dog food, water softner, cleaning stuff, tool kit, drill, DC's arty stuff. Then a 30cm wide tall cupboard for mop/ironing board.

Iron sits on the window sill along with washing powder etc.

Along the wall leading to the back door some coat hooks and boot/shoe storage from Ikea. That no-one ever uses.

On the floor - the dog bed and bowls. And a teeny bin for washing tablet wrappers/tumble dryer fluff.

On the ceiling a sheila's maid airer.

It is teeny but I luffs it.

butterfliesinmytummy · 08/09/2013 21:18

My utility room has loads of cupboards, tiled floor, sink, washing machine, dryer, clothes rack on the ceiling etc and the best thing about it is that it's upstairs. No need for taking baskets of clothes and bedding up and down stairs.

NorbertDentressangle · 08/09/2013 21:23

My favourite thing in my utility room is my Laundry Maid clothes airer (one on a pulley) - fantastic thing! You can dry so much on it and its out of the way.

A decent size sink is essential too (for paint trays, hand washing , cleaning football boots etc.

Other than that, what everyone else has said really.
