Thermal curtains

Hello. I would really appreciate some suggestions to ensure we don't freeze this winter.

We have just moved to a new house with single glazing and we can't really afford to replace all the windows just now. We have a pretty large living room which has one window to the front and two large awning windows and an exterior door to the back. The back windows and door are all together and there is a radiator in front of the windows.

There are some pretty thin floor length curtains covering windows and door at the moment but surely any heat from the radiator is going to go straight out the window? I think it would be better to replace them with thermal curtains that end between the window sill and the top of the radiator. But I will still need a floor length curtain on the door directly beside them (they are currently all covered by one set of curtains on the same pole).

Any suggestions on how to make this warm and not terrible looking? Would it be better to have a different style curtain for the door? I don't know if there is really enough room for two separate poles though. Any thoughts or suggestions welcome!

We live in an old cold house too. Have you looked at magneglaze as an alternative to double glazing - is relatively cheap - you measure and fit it yourself. Curtains wise as far as I could work. out blackout lining for curtains and thermal curtains are the same thing. you can either buy hook in ready made blackout lining in fixed sizes to add to existing curtains (seems to be easier to find in online baby stores) or order curtains choosing heavy material with blackout lining. John Lewis were particularly helpful for exploring the options. Good luck and buy some good slippers!

Thanks for the suggestions. Will definitely need to find some good slippers. I guess liners could be good for a temporary solution but will need to think about how to stop the heat escaping out the window - might just fold the curtains up onto the window sill and think about a more elegant solution later!

You can get thermal black out curtain linings from Amazon - just add on to the existing hooks.
