We need to tart up bathroom in fairly run down flat which we need to sell. Can't afford much.

Would
New taps
Painted grouting
Painted walls
Bath panel
New cabinet above sink

Be sufficient? And any other ideas? I was thinking about Perspex sheeting on walls but its expensive isn't it?

But tilings really expensive, isn't it? That's why I considered whacking up some Perspex sheeting.

I tiled my whole bathroom including floor tiles for £200 Wink

Then made a bath panel with matching tiles on it for £50

I would re tile.
£200 should tile whole bathroom if you do it yourself ( as long as it isn't super large). Get large tiles an will be fairly quick. A sand/ natural colour can make it look sophisticated.

Or you can Ike around shower/ bath/ sink and paint

Check out ikea. They have good priced taps and cabinets ( and bath panels I think)

PigOnStilts · 01/09/2013 10:37

Could I just paint the existing tiles? Does that ever look good?

Painted tiles generally look shite. Tiles don't need to cost much (although you will need a cutter and a lot more adhesive than you thought). Large tiles can be quite thick and so harder to cut - small tiles are fiddlier. Mosaics come in sheetes and sre pretty easy to put up. You can buy vinyl flooring very cheaply to spruce up floor. New taps could mean paying a plumber to fit if the pipework is old-fashioned.

If you are going to retile the bathroom, I strongly recommend removing the basin and loo first, so that the wall will be fair behind them. A plumber can usually do this in a hour or less.

Then, if you have a bit more money next year, you can buy a new basin and taps, or a new loo, and have them fitted to the fair wall without ugly gaps or holes. Any small screw-holes from the old basin can be filled with grout and will not be intrusive, but will probably be below the new basin anyway so out of sight. Ask the tiler to drill the holes.

Keep a couple of boxes of spare tiles behind the bath panel.

New taps make an enormous difference to the smartness of a bathroom.

If it's just the grouting that's horrible try digging it out and regrouting? There are tools for getting it out.

Any chance of some pics of the bathroom for a nosey better advice?

PigOnStilts · 02/09/2013 10:06

The tiles wouldn't be so bad, but at one point they are really cooked, moves out as is if the whole wall is wonky....despite that its an 1850s town house, I don't think that this can translate into old fashioned charm....and it's the main reason for the retailing tbh. Maybe I should just get a radiator installed over it.

How about tongue and groove painted in the areas where it is not wet. We have just done this to a bathroom that needed a little pick me up and it looks like a different room. All sanitary ware and tiles were fine just looked a bit bare. Depends how bad your tiles are I guess.
