Riptide/Endless Pool?

BoffinMum · 31/08/2013 18:21

I am thinking about getting a Riptide or Endless Pool to help with my hip problem but don't want to spend that kind of money without trying it first, and discussing it with another person who already has one. Does anyone on MN have one? Any advice?

Whereabouts are you? I know that swimtherapy near Leicester have one - it may be worth googling for swim training type places to see if anything pops up?

We'd love one and oh (who had a swim therapy training session) adapted to it very quickly.

Cambridge - I tried a local place but I have rung and rung and emailed and the man just hasn't responded.

spend the money on gym membership, personal trainer and meeting like minded folks

BoffinMum · 01/09/2013 19:50

No, tried all that and the only only thing that has worked was daily swimming, but I get thrush from public pools and shared pools. A lot of gym type stuff I can't do because of my disability, tbh. Completely wasted my money.

boffin - find an outside pool - colder water better for you, as is the vitamin d
that and no children pools tend to have lighter chemical mix
salt water pools are the very best
I'll do some looking up ....

Talkinpeace · 01/09/2013 19:56

Jesus Green looks wonderful for the summer .... but your local David Lloyd has an outdoor pool which will be heated and based on salt purification and be open year round ....

BoffinMum · 02/09/2013 07:28

I am supposed to be swimming in the once or twice a day and on top of a commute to London trekking the half hour to somewhere like Jesus Green isn't going to work Wink I know you are trying to be helpful but we've thought this through very carefully.

I don't know what one of those is Boffers but it sounds really nice.! And I don't even have a hip problem..

Hi Boffin,

We're thinking of getting a swim spa too at the moment. Have tried one at a friend's house and they seem great. Thinking (hoping!) we would use it more than we would a regular pool since we could heat it up to a decent temperature quite easily.

There seem to be loads of different makes out there so it's hard to know what to go for. Quite like the look of the Riptide Poseidon (separate hot tub bit at the end so you can heat that to higher temp than the main swimming bit)

Have no advice really though, as still at the planning stage. We'd get it sunken into the ground, so it looks more pool-like than hot-tub-like.

BoffinMum · 02/09/2013 07:56

I think we might go with the entry level Riptide as we have a space around the side of the house where I could install it on a terrace without sinking it in, and then gate it off safely, I think.

Is the jet infinitely adjustable? I have found doing dainty 'dry hair breaststroke' was the thing that helped the hip most.

How noisy are they? Would it affect the neighbours?

BoffinMum · 02/09/2013 08:04

Hadn't thought about that but our neighbours are terrific so I think they'll be fine about it, especially if I let their grandchildren swim in it from time to time.

I don't recall it being overly noisy when I was in my friend's one. Not sure about the jets. Website does say they are adjustable.

Am also looking into an automated cover thing, if it's available for whichever pool we end up getting. I figure that if removing the cover is an awful hassle, I won't end up using the pool often enough!

MadeOfStarDust · 02/09/2013 08:29

We stayed in a holiday cottage with a hot-tub next door and had to ask for it to be switched off as it was next to the kids bedroom and kept them awake with the continual loud droning of the pump. The folks next door weren't happy because they had rented the place because of the tub for the evenings, we had to compromise and it spoiled the holiday a bit.

I just imagine the jet pump will be very loud compared to a hot tub...

BoffinMum · 02/09/2013 08:58

It's not like a jacuzzi, in that you only turn the jet on if you are actually swimming.

I know you really just want to hear about these pools, but... If you have a hip problem, you probably need to avoid breast stroke and re-train to do crawl or back-stroke. I ignored similar advice about 5 years ago, and am now faced with the likelihood of a hip replacement before I'm 50.

Also, have a look at the Outdoor Swimming Society (their Facebook page is more interesting than their website). Their wild swim map will help you find places near you. River and pond swimming are much better for you than pool swimming, and I alternate with saunas to get joint/pain/circulation benefits.

BoffinMum · 02/09/2013 09:17

flow4, I actually have a particular type of pelvis/ligament problem and not a ball and socket one. I am under medical supervision for this enterprise.

OP posts:
flow4 · 02/09/2013 09:38

Guess you know what you're doing then. Grin
I have hypermobility syndrome, so ligament problems too; but ball-and-socket problems (early arthritis) have developed after several years of swimming breast stroke 4 times a week. It is very unsettling to be trying to unlearn 40+ years of breast-stroking now!

BoffinMum · 02/09/2013 12:41

I've got osteoarthritis too, but in my back and not the ball and socket joint (luckily). I can actually swim front crawl etc but that just doesn't get rid of the pain, it makes it worse.

I have a good friend who has an Endless Pool, but unfortunately we moved away from her so we rarely see each other. I got in a great routine when we were close by I'd spend a couple days a week swimming and really loved the pool and it was easy to adjust to my swimming pace (she was much faster than I was!). Here is their website if you want to take a look and it looks like they now do swim spas and swimming pools. www.endlesspools.co.uk/
