Anyone got a Garden Room/Office?

And are you pleased you got one? We need an extra room for DH home office. Originally we were going to convert the loft, but a friend suggested getting a garden room as an alternative option.

And looking at their price tag it looks like a very attractive option!

Just wondered if anyone out there has a garden office and can provide any feedback & recommend any good retailers?

Thanks very much!

We built our own.
It is definitely great and versatile. We used it as a bar when having garden parties. We've used it a shed and as an office.

Tips

  1. think long and hard about windows - you may want light and nice views but not hot mid day sun streaming in - or buy the right kind of glass for that.
  2. Don't skim on insulation. Bottom price salesmen may tell you that you don't need to build it to the same standard as if you were building and extension so you can save money on insulation - base, walls and roof. --- run a mile! That saves you such a small proportion of the over all cost and you will regret it.
  3. think about going out there when it is poring with rain - where will you hag your coat or pu your umberella. Make sure you have a good path - not mud.
  4. think about whether it needs to be suitable for visiting clients or work colleagues as it is in a private part of your home - your back garden - with your pants hanging on washing line!

Thanks for your tips - you raise some good points. Muddy shoes - I hadn't factored in creating a path, but it sounds obvious when you mention it.

Between you and I we learnt that from experience.

Your neighbours will think you are trying to build a house in your garden. Best practice would be to apply for planning permission or a certificate of lawful development depending on the size. If you are sure it fits within permitted development and dont want to get a certificate be prepared for enforcement to visit.
