Polished concrete kitchen flours

We are planning a kitchen extension and I have my heart set on polished concrete floors! Wondered if anyone has any experience of them, how much they are per sq metre, best places to go for them? It should be fairly easy to lay as will be pouring onto an extension

they just lay the concrete as they normally would but when its gone off a little use a machine to flatten it/polish it up, machines can be hired for not a lot of money. when we got a garage floor done the polishing only took a few hours so didnt cost much at all. inside a house though may be a different story as I cant see them being able to get the same machine in a house as was used in our garage - the head of the machine was about 1mtr in diameter.

sorry meant to say our builder done the work, we didnt get anyone special in to do it.

I looked into it last year, I remember it starting at about £60 m2. The finer the finish, the more expensive it gets.

I was at a friends who had underfloor heating with polished concrete. It was in the last cold snap, and it was just lovely. She and her husband are very happy with its durability and I was very jealous.

I think they had had it for a couple of years, so I don't know about any longer term than that.

Overthefields, can you remember names of any of the concrete suppliers?

I will go back through my history and bookmarks and see if I can find them.

I've seen it done more than once where it has developed quite a lot of cracks - I love the look but the cracks made me think twice.

I really wanted this but couldn't afford it and was put off by lots of reports of cracks appearing - esp as ours is an old terraced house likely to move again in future.

I found one firm - Paul Davies Design - that would do polished concrete tiles which I LOVED, and thought would be a great alternative; but in the end we were advised (by my dad, builder - and the company concurred) that our kitchen floor wasn't strong enough to support the tiles and would be too much to get it strengthened. Instead, we went for a concrete worktop from the same company.
