Could you (hypothetically) have a bus stop moved?

DP and I have spotted a house. Three storey Victorian terrace on a main road, good price, no back garden but can live with that for now. All in, we like it a lot.

Being a victorian property there's no driveway, obviously. There is however a spacious front garden which lots of neighboring properties have converted to a driveway with a dropped kerb. But this property has a bus stop right in front of it. Not a full-on shelter, just a sign, but enough to prevent us from getting a car in. There are double yellows all up the road which prevent parking on the street.

So, has anyone ever successfully got a bus company to move a bus stop up a few feet? I'm worried about getting my heart set on it and realizing this isn't a go-er. We need a space for a car.

Disclaimer: I have no issue with people "loitering" outside my front wall or it looking common or anything, I just want a car parking space!

I can't quite see how this would work. Wouldn't it move it in front of someone else's house, who would then request for it to be moved back again, or is there an appropriate place for it to go? Are you trying to get it precisely between two driveways so you can both drive around it?

FWIW, many years ago a friend's dad successfully 'moved' a lamppost - when they were all taken down to be replaced, under cover of darkness he carefully washed out the marks for where the lamposts was going to be replaced, and then chalked it back in further down the pavement, ready for the workmen the next morning. But then he had to do the same thing right down the road...

I see what you mean, but it would ideally be between the gate posts/wall of "my" house and the neighbouring property. There's a good two foot of wall shared with the hose next door it could be plonked in front of.

Not exactly the same thing but my BIL & SIL bought a house some years ago, not on a bus route. Then 2 or 3 yrs after they bought it, the town's bus service started a route that went down their road. They received notification that a bus stop was going right outside their house (they have a front garden but it was literally in the middle of the outlook from their living room window). They objected but to no avail. They put up the bus stop AND quite a big bus shelter. Its horrendous.

So I anticipate it will depend on how co-operative your local council would be, but fear (based on the above) that you wouldn't have much success.

Try ringing the local council. It is certainly possible to move a bus stop temporarily or permanently, but whether the council/ bus company would be willing for any reason other than safety issues.

You could offer to foot the bill, but I suspect it would cost three figures The paperwork and staff time as well as shifting infrastructure wouldn't come cheap.

Oh and if there's double yellows all up the street, except for the bus stop then there's probably a traffic regulation for no parking order on the whole street. So they'd just move the bus stop markings and paint some double yellow lines there.
