What grey emulsion to go with lime green sofas?

Please help. I want to paint my living room in a mid grey, but I don't want it to look too cold or cement-y. The room is south-facing and very light (Victorian house, high ceilings, huge bay). It needs to go well with lime green sofas.

I have bought F&B Pavillion Grey and Dove Tail but I am still unsure - I am not sure how helpful it is to paint sections (I've used a piece of cardboard to move it around the room) - it will probably look pretty different once the whole wall is painted. What do you think of those colours? Our skirting board and picture rail are white, will there be too much contrast if I use Dove Tail? Will it look cold with Pavillion grey?

I also considered Elephant's Breath but it doesn't look grey in the chart, more like a salmony beige.

Also, what do you do with the bit of wall above the picture rail, should it get painted in the same colour as below the rail, in a different one or in white, like the ceiling?

Thanks - I love colours but find it really difficult to get them right,.

Dove Tail is greyish but warm and I would go for that (speaking as a person who had two huge lime green sofas until recently) Personally , and there will be loads of people who disagree with me , I would paint up to the ceiling/ coving including the picture rail in the same colour . Dove Tail is a very forgiving colour - I love it .

Elephant's breath is definitely grey - I have it in my living room. If it were my room, I'd use a darker grey against lime green though.

Try Dulux Flint. Looks ace in my son's room with white and a lime door! And buckets of Wimborne white.

If you don't mind something with a purple tint, try Dulux Potter's Clay. We have it in our kitchen/family room, where we have lime green in the curtains to the patio doors, and get many compliments about it.

I have elephants breath in 2 rooms It is grey in the bedroom and more pinky beige in the bathroom

Hi, thank you! The more I think about it, the more inclined I am to go for Elephant's breath. I think what I am after is greige rather than a true grey. Noddy, does your bathroom face south, and is that why it looks beige? Also, is it a nice beige (pinky beige doesn't sound great!).

Also, please tell me what to do with the part of the wall above the picture rail! Should the whole wall be the same colour, including the rail as maddybassett suggests? Or is it acceptable to paint the picture rail white and the bit above it a lighter colour than below?

Thanks, thanks, thanks. I need to make a decision before the weekend!

In our south facing kitchen Elephant's Breath looks pinkish. Really nice, but defiantly a warm colour rather than a cool grey.

mummaemma · 27/08/2013 19:05

I would go for cornforth white f & b. Lovely mid grey

noddyholder · 27/08/2013 19:24

Yes bathroom faces south and def more beige but still lovely. Much greyer in the front of the house. My sister has cornforth and it looks very blue in her west facing room

mosaica · 27/08/2013 20:07

Pavillion Grey it is, then. I think it is the most likely color to go well with a lime green. Thank you all!

Now, do I paint the whole wall in the same color? Or is a different color above the picture rail acceptable?

We had manor house grey in our last living room, which sounds very similar to yours (south facing, large bay etc). It was absolutely stunning and people always commented. I'll try and find a pic.

Chunkamatic · 28/08/2013 00:20

here sorry on iPad so don't know how to save individual photos.

MairzyDoats · 28/08/2013 00:25

Re your picture rail, painted wall up to the rail, white rail, white above, white ceiling. Definitely. Hth.

noddyholder · 28/08/2013 08:10

We have picture rail and skirtings in the same colour but eggshell looks gorgeous. Ceiling white everything else grey looks most elegant .

mummaemma · 28/08/2013 09:02

Chunkamatic- your last house was gorgeous. Love to see your new pad. Love manor house grey. What colour is the light blue in bedroom and downstairs.

mummaemma · 28/08/2013 09:03

And forgot to add what grey is on the front door

mosaica · 28/08/2013 09:44

Chunkamatic, what a lovely house! You have a great eye for color. Re painting picture rail and skirting on the same colour as the walls, would the bay window frame need to be painted grey too? I think that'd be too much of a change for me - I agree it'd look very good but i don't think i have the confidence for it!

Chunkamatic - what colour is that room with the green Ercol sofa in it - that's a nice pale bluey grey too.

noddyholder · 28/08/2013 10:21

We have the window frame and sashes painted too It has a white ceiling though and lots of light from the big windows and does look great.

Chunkamatic · 29/08/2013 08:22

Thanks! The colour in the downstairs room is actually a Dulux colour called Georgian Grey, which DP bought a 5 ltr tin of for £5 in the sale! We needed to redecorate that room before we could sell so used that but mixed with half white emulsion to make paler. We were very pleased with our bargain results!
The blue in the bedroom is F&B borrowed light and the front door is F&B pigeon.

I would love to see pics of the painted windows etc noddyholder, as I'm really curious as to how it looks!

noddyholder · 29/08/2013 09:57

Will try and post some this afternoon Have carpet fitter in there atm! And plasterer downstairs where my camera is!

mummaemma · 29/08/2013 19:58

Thanks chunkamatic
