Rewiring required if last done in 1985?

What do you think?

Husband says yes, I'm not so sure. The house is one we've seen and thinking of putting an offer on.

I know it doesn't have the number of sockets we'd like but would that make it necessary to redo the whole lot?

Thanks

If it's your forever home, I'd get it done. It's dirty, dusty and disruptive, but once it's done, it's done and you can redecorate to your taste.

Otherwise you should bother, but I probably wouldn't.

Thanks nancerama. It is meant to be the house for the next 20 years so I guess it would be worth it (we'll probably do the plumbing at the same time).

You may not need a complete rewire it will depend what was done last time. You need to get an electrician out to test what's in there now. The existing wiring may be fine and extra sockets can be added or they may need to rewire / replace boards etc.
Just guessing isn't going to work. Personally I'd budget for a rewire and then if it's not needed Grin yay extra for something else.

Thanks wonkylegs. I'll assume the worst.

Any idea what a 248 m2 house, 3 public, 5 bed & 1 bath might cost to rewire?

Central Scotland.

we've just moved into a 1987 property. rewire not required following safety check. i haven't got 3kto chuck around so we are not doing it.

A rewire costs the same as a second-hand car.

Think I'll budget 6 - 7 k then, then if it's not I can have the cash to go premium on the white goods.

Thanks all.
