Living on site during renovation work

Does anyone have any experience of living on site whilst works are carried out? We are buying a property which needs extensive work, and our builder has estimated about 3 months for the most disruptive work. We had considered renting nearby but have struggled to find shorter terms than a six month rental. Would renting a static caravan on site plugged into mains electricity and water be more cost effective? We have a very active 10 month old so I'm not sure that a caravan will be ideal especially over the winter months. Any advice gratefully received! Thanks.

you will not like living in a property that is being knocked about, and the builders will not like you in the way. It will take longer and cost more as things will have to be made safe-ish most of the time to prevent you falling down holes. You, your clothes, your hair and your lungs will be full of dust. You lo will try to drink bottles of white spirit or glue and will play with sharp objects and bare wires. Your cat will go under the floor and never be seen again.

We are considering the exact same thing! I am just collecting quotes. If it is cost effective we will do this as it will also give us some onsite storage within carrying distance of the house.

Maybe you could find a summer holiday let that is usually empty over the winter anyway. Three months and furnished - put your own things in storage.

If you're set on the static caravan idea, consider whether you need planning permission.
