Small dark north facing room - paint recommendations

We are about to redecorate our dining room which also has my desk in it as I work from home. Its a small, north facing room with only one small window so its pretty dark.

Does anyone have any paint colour recommendations - I've been look at F&B, Fired Earth and Little Greene. I don't want a dark and cosy look as I work from that room. And I'm not keen on yellow either!

no actual recommendations but what about a pale green or grey colour? if you get very pale it will still be light but with a hint of colour in it. I would say cream but if you don't like yellows then some of the creams might be too yellowy. we have classic cream in one of our rooms and I really like it.

don't go white or ivory I don't think as that will probably look quite cold in a dark north facing room.

personally I would probably say pale grey and then some brighter accessories.

We painted our north facing dining room in F&B String. It's slightly mustardy in colour but gentle at the same time. We have a very big bay window though so probably different lighting to yours. Our kitchen is also north facing and it's painted in new white, a very warm white.

well if it was me i would go an off white colour and add colourful assessories.

fanjobiscuits · 18/08/2013 21:16

What about a light, warm duskyish pink?

fanjobiscuits · 18/08/2013 21:17

Or peach?

fanjobiscuits · 18/08/2013 21:17

Or light mauve?

mummaemma · 18/08/2013 21:17

reading immes comment, new white sounds good or theres strong white f&b which has a little hint of grey tones

fanjobiscuits · 18/08/2013 21:18

I would also put in a big mirror to reflect what light there is and brighten it up a bit

My bedroom at my parents house was small, dark & north facing. I painted it blue. BIG MISTAKE. Unless you are happy to keep the heating on high in the winter (and spring & autumn as well) it's likely to be cold in there. Blue tones will make it feel colder. I'd go for warmer tones - rose, terracotta, yellow, rich cream, pink shades of lilac etc. Maybe rose white if you want it really pale to make the most of the light.

My north facing lounge is decorated in FB White Tie. Also liked Satin Slipper but DH thought it too grey.

Little Greene - mirror or acorn both warm pale greens.
Linen wash or clay pole for more neutral
Welcome & whisper for a warm grey

We used the Dulux light reflecting paint in our lounge that was dark and north facing. It is light blue (not recommending the colour, just explaining) but apparently the paint has glass particles in it to reflect the light.

And, by jingo, it really works. The room is transformed from when we first moved in.

We used it in the hall too, I think the Morning Light colour and the whole place looks really so much better.

I recently painted my son's north facing room in Dulux Just Walnut, after someone on here recommended it. It's a beautiful soft light grey. It looks absolutely lovely.

Ezza1 · 19/08/2013 11:29

I'm pleased you wrote that basket as I've just bought some of the Dulux Light and Space (ocean ripple) to do my sons new attic room and was thinking about getting some for our dark, very high ceilinged hallway, stairs and landing.

Looking forward to painting now Grin

Another vote for the Dulux light reflecting paint. It transformed our north facing sitting room.

Great suggestions, thanks.
I love grey but thought grey in a dark room would be a big no no. I have a sample of FB White Tie which I like but will try FB new white and some of the Little Greene suggestions.

Big mirror is planned too!

Maybe Farrow and Ball Elephants Breath? Beautiful warm taupe.Or Farrow's cream always lovely in a north facing room. Warmer and a more definite shade than White Tie but along the same lines.

My office is east-facing and the walls are Dulux Timeless. I have teal and lime curtains and accessories. I like it, it's cheery.
