which white paint for re-doing all the woodwork in the house?

skirting boards, door frames, curtain poles, built-in wardrobe, fire surround, kitchen table and chairs.

i'm doing it all the same colour but which paint would be best in terms of shade and durability (and wipeability for things like kitchen table and skirting boards). not so keen on glossing everything tbh.

what are my options?

We have used Dulux Eggshell on all those surfaces. I think it looks nice, it lets the grain of the wood show and wipes clean.

We chose brilliant white but I guess the choice of shade may depend on the age of the property? My white may be too bright for a period house?

it's a 30's council built terrace. not sure if that's period or not? Confused

is eggshell the paint that cracks intentionally when drying?

I find eggshell holds the dirt and looks like undercoat.

I'd go for satinwood, if you don't want gloss.

I've spent most of the day doing mine in Crown non drip gloss. Because it was cheap in B And M Bargains!
I usually use satinwood but i have to admit the gloss looks nice. I find satinwood needs touched up yearly to keep it looking fresh.

really coco? is the gloss brilliant white? and is it really smelly?

would it look odd to have things like curtain poles, wardrobes and kitchen table and chairs painted in gloss?

Yes its white and yes its smelly! I don't think it would look odd to have this things painting in gloss but thats my taste. There is a big difference between it and the satinwood, more noticable that I would have thought.

Unfortunately everything needs painted now because it looks shabby next to the newly painted stuff Hmm

My bannister looks amazing!

"Unfortunately everything needs painted now because it looks shabby next to the newly painted stuff hmm"

that's always the way. that's why i'm doing it all at the same time. you'll see me around here a lot over the next few weeks Grin

I forgot, i'm also doing the banister too.

My painter told me white gloss has a tendency to go yellow after a few months/years, especially if there is not much natural light around. So we used eggshell, It's ok, but the finish probably isn't as nice and apparently it chips more easily.

PigletJohn · 18/08/2013 20:56

modern low-VOC white oil-based paints tend to yellow if used indoors away from windows. The later versions of Dulux Trade with blue lids are to a revised formula which is said to stay whiter.

water-based white paint doesn't yellow, but is not so durable.

thanks this is great info- really helpful. I think durability is probably the most important factor for me with small dcs so i'd be willing to use gloss if that was the only way to get that. sounds like the dulux trade might be the way to go.

I'm going to use Zinsser BIn shellac next time. It is meant to be a primer but has a nice low sheen and does not yellow at all. Plus it dries in record time.

Yonihadtoask · 18/08/2013 21:23

This was a useful thread for me too.

We have a lot of woodwork painted in white gloss. It has yellowed far too quickly- within months - so all needs to be done again.

Will look for the Dulux trade.

greyvix · 18/08/2013 22:58

Useful for me too. I am about to embark on bathroom woodwork and was dithering between satinwood and gloss. Gloss it is (but will look at Dulux Trade) as it is more wipeable than satinwood.
