Roll up, roll up and help me design my new laundry room!

I have an idea of a calm, bright and organised utility room with a bench for sitting to put shoes on and a small low sink to wash off muddy boots. I have uploaded the plan onto my profile if anyone thinks they can help?

I have put a laundry chute in, but due to the upstairs room it starts in, it has to be put in this position. This seems to be my main area of mental block! I wanted to have a basket/hamper in a closed cupboard to keep the laundry thrown down the chute hidden. However this seems to either result in wasted corner space or a large open door cupboard with small drawer set to one side underneath? I don't think that is very clear...hmm. I just don't know what to do underneath the cupboard IYKWIM?

I need undercounter space for a washing machine and tumble. Could stack them but worried about movement and also blocking light from the window?

I also ideally wanted a small butler sink low under the window (the bit on the right far wall is a window) but am unsure if there will then be room for a bench on that side, or whether I should fit it between the doors on the other wall? I only really need a cupboard for detergent and another tall one for ironing board and mop. I like the idea of having a pole to hang shirts to dry if we could use the side of the tall cupboard as part of that? But then I don't want to block out light from the window...argh.

I am sure I am missing something and there is a simple solution but my brain is a bit threadbare thinking on it! HELP!

Hi
I am currently at the moment finishing my laundry room. Were are your water, waste and electrical points going to be situated and how big is the window?

Lioninthesun · 14/08/2013 15:04

Waste pipe comes up to the left of the back wall where I imagined I wanted the washing machine. Window is 120x120cm. Just trying to find the up to date electrical plans, but think I had x4 sockets on the long wall and x2 lower (under the cupboard space) or the washer and dryer. These are flexible though as I know the electrician.

My new utility room looks similar. No laundry shoot though.

I have two narrow windows along the one wall and plan to have washing machine, dryer then a large shaker sink. To the right of the sink will be open space for laundry and ironing baskets. These will all sit under the worktop.

The worktops do not go round the corner. My doors are positioned in the middle of the short walls meaning I have useable space behind the door.
I intend to have a bench with space below to store shoes. Above the bench I will have a row of coat hooks to hang jackets, bags etc. High up on that wall I will have 'pigeon holes' with baskets to store all sorts of useless crap.

I am going to have open shelves on the wall with the two windows to hold all the cleaning stuff.

You can also put shelves above the door, maybe run a high shelf all the way around the room.

I am having one of those Sheila Maid type airers to dry clothes on.

Jacaqueen · 14/08/2013 17:28

Looking again at your plans I see your doors cannot be moved due to the window and chute (spelling it correctly this time).

Let me have a little think and I will return.

RoseFlowerFairy · 14/08/2013 17:44

Can you have a hanging rail above the doors along the redundant wall? You will need a stool I imagine to take clothes off and on.

TheWookiesWife · 14/08/2013 19:01

For some reason it couldn't find your picture ?!? Was looking to see if I could help too ?!

Lioninthesun · 14/08/2013 19:39

I was hoping to have a ceiling airer - one of the old fashioned pulley types. Thought that would save some space. Anyone else having trouble seeing the pic? Wookies are you looking at the bold link on my profile that says see pics or similar? I don't have a profile pic per se :)

Jaques your laundry room sounds just like I want mine - same bench idea. I have about 1.5mt between the doors I think to have a bench comfortably. I just wonder if it will look cluttered. Should have opted for a smaller window I think!

Would there be room to put the dryer on the work top next to the chute unit so the dryer door would be facing the window. Then put the washing machine at right angles to that on the floor.

Perhaps the wasted space in the corner under the dryer could be accessed from below the laundry chute. Or does the basket have to sit at floor level.

I would probably put the sink next to the washing machine and then have a bench going round the corner under the window with storage under the bench.

Can either of the doors open out the way, rather than into the room?
There seems to be wasted space between the chute and the door. Can the door be moved close to the chute? This will give you a useable corner behind the door.

Lioninthesun · 14/08/2013 20:01

So the dryer by the door on top of the bench, chute to the right of it (if you are facing the door into the hall). The basket doesn't have to be on the floor at all. Was hoping to hid it in a cupboard, but maybe something with a sliding door? Then the washing machine could go under the tumble...but that corner is still wasted. Unless I have a tall cupboard there (would it fit?) and then sink under the window and bench in between? Hmmmm. That might work, does it make sense to you?

Found your pic - was having a senior moment !!
How about having all you domestic stuff behind big sliding doors so when open all easily accessible and when closed the walk through is neat and tidy ?!

Jacaqueen · 14/08/2013 20:21

I meant dryer on the worktop in the corner to the right of the chute. Washing machine under the worktop with the wm door facing the opposite long wall. But like you say you could stack them to the left of the chute and have a pull out shelf in between the two machines. You can use this for folding and sorting. Then have your bench right along the back wall with the sink still at the window.

How big is the chute? Does the laundry come straight out of the ceiling or does the 'pipe' direct the clothes into the basket? My builder will have a fit if I tell him I want a laundry chute.

Lioninthesun · 14/08/2013 20:28

That is just it though, I don't know yet as it hasn't been fitted! Depends on the upstairs cupboard placement as it is to go in the corner of DD's new room (am forseeing lazy teenage years) but I imagine I can have a small flue attached to point it in a direction. I think there are links on Pinterest about DIYing one by cutting a hole in the floor Shock so hopefully it wouldn't be too hard for your builder Grin
The sink was going to be a low small square/rectangular one as DD is only 2 and I wanted her to have somewhere easy to wash hands and also rinse off boots/leave wet paintings etc.
Wookies, thanks - I think I am using the same company who are doing the kitchen for my utility room now, and will ask about sliding doors, although not sure I will need them now!

Hmm, considering a fold down table on wall between doors for folding and sorting...sure I have seen one with a magnet/white board on the 'front' where you can put photos etc. Bloody Pinterest! Giving me too many ideas!

Jacaqueen · 14/08/2013 20:38

The problem is we want this smallish room to be the perfect Laundry, Boot room, Pantry etc etc etc.

I blame mumsnet for giving me too many ideas.

I don't want my appliances behind sliding doors as this is not a through room. One door leads in from the back hall and the other goes to the worlds smallest WC.

Jacaqueen · 14/08/2013 20:39

Bloody Pinterest indeed!

RoseFlowerFairy · 14/08/2013 20:39

I love the idea of the fold down table.

Regarding the laundry chute, how are you going to stop people falling through the floor?

Lioninthesun · 14/08/2013 20:42

It is in a cupboard upstairs. You can have a tilting cupboard like a rubbish chute or a lock on a door (again Pinterest will show you the way as my descriptive talents are somewhat lacking!)
I want this on a bigger scale for opposite the bench with a pin board for pics and a magnetic strip pinterest.com/pin/213076626091784797/

RoseFlowerFairy · 14/08/2013 20:49

oh the chute is in the wall, phew, I had visions of some sort of trapdoor in the floor.

Lioninthesun · 14/08/2013 20:56

Don't you open that TRAPDOOOOR! I think DD would have nightmares!

Google mud rooms for ideas for benches

primallass · 15/08/2013 10:52

I now need a laundry chute. I am in a mudroom setup or laundry cupboard (plus now laundry chute Grin) debate for the alcove in my hall. My OH wants neither of course as it involves effort and money.

Our bathroom is direct above where my laundry cupboard would be. I really can't see him letting me cut a hole in the floor and ceiling though.
