Which quote would you go for?

Our roof has a couple of tiles out of place and the felt underneath ripped where birds got in and we have just had two quotes to fix it.

Quote number 1 was for ~£750 + VAT. The roofer was recommended by a friend who had problems with his roof and this guy was the only one who could work out the problem. He said it was likely that condensation had formed between the rafters and felt causing the wood to rot. This would have caused the tiles to shift. He said he would put scaffolding up, remove a section of tiles and replace the wood underneath before replacing the section of felt and retiling

Quote number 2 came through our door today and was for £120 + VAT to fix tiles and replace felt. Roofer number 2 was recommended on a local review website but when we called they had changed their name from the one listed.

I'm tempted to go for number 1 but I doubt DH will agree. What would you do? Thanks - really appreciating all the help we are getting on here - have taken on a bit more of a project than we are used to and we are bit clueless!

I'd be wary of a company who'd recently changed their name ?! I know it sounds daft - but why change your business name unless there was 'mud' attached to it ?! I'd go with the recommended chap !! Good luck with it all :-)

We had two quotes to fix a victorian copper flat roof over our porch. Quote one said the problem was old copper, which need replacing (many £100s). Quote two said the problem was actually cracked pointing in the wall above the copper roof (

sorry WAS the cheapest quote

Thanks for the replies. DH actually surprised me and said, "I guess we should go for the more expensive one". I am slightly tempted by the cheap one as we are a bit skint at the moment but don't want to face an even bigger bill next year.

I'd get a third quote.

Good point.

First one is planning to replace rotten (potentially) wood in roof.

Second one is going to cover up potentially rotten wood with new felt.

Hm. Certainly couldn't hurt to get more opinions/quotes.
