DD (9yrs) has chosen horrible wallpaper - how do I make it look nice?

DD has set her heart on this paper for her bedroom. It is for a feature wall - not the whole room.

I am not very good at interior design but am wondering how on earth to make it look nice. What colour should I do the other walls? What about curtains / accessories? She currently has white furniture in her room and we're not replacing any of it.

This is a reward for her doing very well at school - we said she could have her room exactly as she wanted it. Doh.

Spotty curtains are happening, Buzzzzz, fret not.

why don't you do the wall opposite the feature wall in turquoise and the other two white ?

Pennies · 08/08/2013 21:42

Opposite the feature wall is a door (oak) and white fitted wardrobes.

Spotty rug with the spotty curtains. What's the rest of the floor like?

I think she's got great taste!

BeesGoBuzzzzzz · 08/08/2013 21:45

Spotty rug ok, stripy one is wrong colours and not nice IMO. Which rug did she choose?

Plain one might be good in whichever colour she likes best from the paper - maybe turquoise instead of the walls.

OK spotty rug.

Spotty rug is nice!

Get your daughter to look at the Urban Outfitters website, they have some amazing rugs that are interesting and very reasonably priced.

for example like this

LibraryBook · 08/08/2013 23:16

Oh sorry, I see you chose a rug.

Pennies · 09/08/2013 07:14

It's a good site - which rug did you think might be best?

White walls would be better, if she'll agree to them and doesn't think they are too boring. I really like the fabric but it would need to be well away from the wallpaper. It's hard to tell from the picture - is it from the same range as the paper, ie. exactly the same colours, and designed to co-ordinate? If so then go for it, but I think that would definitely demand white walls, otherwise just too much business.

That is fab wallpaper. I'd do the whole room in it Grin

KateCroydon · 09/08/2013 10:12

Rug 1 and white walls. Your DD sounds great by the way.

LibraryBook · 09/08/2013 10:53

Your DD has inspired me to beautify my boot room with some bright wallpaper. Please thank her from me.

minibmw2010 · 09/08/2013 18:41

Oh that's not so bad, you could go for those slightly off white/pale grey paints? At least it's not bright pink, good for her Smile

PastaBeeandCheese · 10/08/2013 07:25

I also like the paper. I would encourage white walls too. It could be very dark with turquoise.

Secondsop · 10/08/2013 09:01

I love it!!! And it makes a great change from all the pink stuff that a lot of girls seem to go for. Turquoise on one of the other walls (perhaps not all) might work if it's a pale colour. Otherwise, white walls or perhaps - my favourite - a grey would work. Show her some pictures on the Internet of grey walls and see what she thinks - it can look incredibly striking and modern so may be right up her street. A colour on the walls might work better than white - white walls with one feature wall can look a bit "oh, so you've done a feature wall" whereas a colour can bring a whole look together.

Secondsop · 10/08/2013 09:06

Also, try not to worry about the room looking dark. A dark room painted white doesn't suddenly become a light room - it becomes a dark room painted white. A dark colour, though, with the right lights, injects drama and cosiness and personality. I'm a huge fan of dark walls.

HandbagCrab · 10/08/2013 09:16

I think it would be brilliant to let her have it as she wants it to be. Seeing as though that's what you promised. Personally I love it! Lovely bright colours and shows lots of personality.

You can always paint it off white if you want to sell.
