Moving to Warrington area.. Advice please!

DH has got a job in St Helens so we are looking at moving to the Warrington area. We live in Bury at the moment. My job is field-based so I just need to be close to the M6.

Areas I've read about and driven through and like the sound/look of are Stockton Heath, Appleton, Culcheth. Am I right in thinking these are nice?

Can anyone tell me about Latchford? Have noticed it's very close to Stockton Heath/Grappenhall but property is much cheaper. Is this because it's a bad area? DD is nearly 3 so we want to be in catchment for good primary schools.

Also is Grappenhall nice? Haven't explored it yet but seems slightly less pricey than SH.

Any advice much appreciated! Thanks :)

I can't really comment on the Grappenhall one as I haven't been and don't know anyone who sent their children there. Yes, it was Little Wonders in thelwall.

Sixtiesqueen - I think overall Grappenhall does sound like the best fit for us.

We lived in Reading for 6 years, bought our first house there and still own it (it's being let) just off Oxford Road - not the most glamorous part of town but we had some good years there! We decided to make the move north for better quality of life once DD came along, and as fate would have it DH had the chance to transfer with work so we moved to Bury. Now he's got a fab new job in St Helens I want to fulfil my dream of northern village life and settle in Cheshire long term!

The plan is to move to a nice rental property, stay there for about 5 years, get DD into school (and potentially number 2..) and then once we've sold our Reading house we'll be able to buy up here. If by then we can afford Appleton/Stretton that'll be ideal as the kid(s) will already be settled in good schools nearby, most likely Grappenhall.

Thanks again for all your advice!

alexd83, have a wander down to Grappenhall village - 2 cute pubs, a church, a school and a cobbled street. It's just lovely. We were the "wrong" side on the a50 and in the cheap seats but often walked up to the pubs (pre DC), only 5 mins away. You're right on the canal towpath there which makes for a good place to feed the ducks.
Good Luck with the move!

Ah the Oxford road! I miss Reading a lot. I'd have liked to have stayed there but there weren't many jobs in my field in Berkshire when I graduated. I still hanker after a nice Edwardian house in Caversham!

Good luck with your move. Grappenhall really is very nice for families, you will probably settle there and see no reason to move to more expensive areas unless you want a bigger garden. I'd look around st Wilfred's drive and the roads adjacent to it. Aim for st Wilfred's school - the nearest good nursery is probably the old vicarage at Appleton Thorn. Food at the Rams head pub has gone downhill, try the Parr Arms instead (or better still, the Little Manor in nearby Thelwall).

Depends a lot on the style of property you are after and what you are willing to pay. I'm very familiar with the area and the reason why Appleton, Stockton Heath, Lymm etc are expensive is because they are nicer places to live and the house prices remain constant because of this. Sure you will get more house for your money elsewhere but you won't get as much when you sell on and it probably won't be as nice a place to live.

If you are after modern properties in a family friendly area, 'new' Appleton is the place to be IMO and there are several parks/play areas for children. . You're still close enough to walk to Stockton Heath for a night out plus you're in the catchment area of good schools. In Stockton Heath, there aren't as many modern properties and parking/traffic is a constant problem.

There are modern properties in Grappenhall Heys too but you're a bit more cut off that way - you will be driving to get a pint of milk.

We looked at Culcheth originally - it's not a patch on South Warrington. Croft is OK if you want a semi rural lifestyle or are into horses - not much else there.

Sixtiesqueen · 09/08/2013 22:33

Depends whether you like modern properties. I like some of the roads in 'new' appleton (for example, around Chartwell Gardens or Rosemoor Gardens) but I'm less keen on other parts like Beamish Close, Hatfield Gardens etc) as the houses are so close together, ceilings too low- all the things that people generally say about modern houses.

Agree about Croft. Seems to be just a main road.

holidaybug · 10/08/2013 16:17

Rosemoor is well set out but not keen on Chartwell - little in way of on road parking.

The larger houses on Hatfield are nice and spacious.

I live in Appleton and its lovely area and actually I've got two young children at grappenhall heys school and can't speak highly enough of it. It's got a really good reputation around here. The children aren't just numbers as I felt they were when I visited other schools in the area. It's a small school and there are always going to be a small percentage unhappy with some things- but in my experience and there are many, many like me- I feel they really do try very hard to support children and parents in a genuinely very individual and nurturing way. My kids have both flourished since starting at the school and become more confident and are so happy there. What more can I ask for!? You should go and have a look around and see what you feel yourself. Good luck!

nobullshitallowed · 27/02/2017 18:19

I moved from bury to newton-le-willows. I'm right next to the m6. Close to St. Helens and Warrington. Love it here x

mmchocolate · 27/02/2017 18:39

Brilliant I'm glad you're happy and thanks for the update Grin

Roseelove · 27/02/2017 19:28

Just wondering why you've picked Warrington area? Have you not looked into garswood and winstanley, excellent route to M6 a lot quieter too traffic wise

Lilmisskittykat · 27/02/2017 22:51

I was also curious why not St. Helens when that's where you work ..

rachael2370 · 24/02/2018 17:31

My daughter is starting a job at Cavendish Nuclear. Can you confirm where she should rent in the area? We are from Leeds. She wants something with a nice centre etc.

millimat · 24/02/2018 18:17

Is that in daresbury? If so, Sandymoor is a lovely area with affordable property. It does yet have a centre as such though.
Stockton heath is very close by and is a lovely village. Pricey to buy or rent the.
